Default Stolen Oscars in History

Every fanboy in the world will tell you that Annie Hall won Best Picture of 1977 over Star Wars and as good as Star Wars was, strong arguments will form over whether Annie Hall stole it from SW (the heat of the argument directly proportional to how big a SW fan the person is. lol)

However, there are other films that were upsets. Some that were controversial choices and some considered plain, blatant robberies. Here are my own personal choices for consideration:

1. Citizen Kane lost to whatever piece of crap that got chosen that year.

2. The Color Purple lost to Out of Africa - What the hell were they thinking?

3. The Shawshank Redemption lost to Forrest Gump - Gump was a great film but come on!!

4. Saving Private Ryan lost to Shakespere in Love - Spielberg again but isn't this obvious? SIL is an awsome film. I love it but against one of the best war movies ever made? No chance!

Crash winning the Oscar over Brokeback Mountain, Munich, Capote, and Good Night and Good Luck. While I am not a Crash hater. I thought it was a good movie, but not better than any of the other four it won over.

Yep, Saving Private Ryan definately got jobbed big time as did Star Wars. Star Wars not getting it is probably the biggest rip job in history. Academy doesn't like Lucas and never has, thats why the movies always got jobbed in almost every category.

I think 1 and 4 (and 4 in particular) were stolen. 2 and 3 seem like personal preferences.

Did you see Capote? Hoffman was fantastic in it and the Oscar was well deserved.

Denzel Washington losing Best Actor (Malcolm X) to Al Pacino (Scent of a Woman). Pacino is an incredible actor but Scent of a Woman was not an Oscar winning performance, Denzel totally embodied Malcolm X. But I think this lost was more a F- you to Spike Lee than Denzel, because all Spike was talking about for months was how Denzel deserved to win.

Adrien Brody as Wladyslaw Szpilman in "The Pianist" over Daniel Day Lewis as Bill The Butcher in "Gangs of New York." I'm still mad about that one. I'll agree that "The Pianist" is probably a better movie than "Gangs of New York," but there is no way that Adrien Brody's performance came even close to Daniel Day Lewis' performance. With "The Pianist" it was the movie that made Adrien Brody's performance good; with "Gangs of New York" it was Daniel Day Lewis' performance that made the movie good.

Well, I would never call How Green Was My Valley a piece of crap. It was a fantastic movie. But you're right that it wasn't in Citizen Kane's league. But you have to remember the controversy surrounding Citizen Kane when it was released. William Randolph Hearst launched a campaign to destroy the film. There was simply no way it could win in that environment at that period of time.

1980: Ordinary People over Raging Bull

Dances With Wolves over Goodfellas made me want to stop paying attention to the Oscars.

1999 - Roberto Benigni winning Best Actor for Life is Beautiful over Edward Norton for American History X. To me, Norton had that award won already!

2001 - A Beautiful Mind winning Best Picture over The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

2006 - George Clooney winning Best Supporting Actor in Syriana over Matt Dillon in Crash.

I think the CGI itself in Golden Compass was done better but Transformers was implemented into the live action more impressively.

I can't help it but I think Crash was a craptastic film. It deals with race issues in the most stereotypical, retarded way. It is so unintelligent and shallow it is not even funny. There are so many better race related movies that are eons better and did not win an Oscar.
