Default Pioneer To End TV Production, Spin Off DVD Development

First thing I'm doing when I get home is cuddling my 6020

Quote:
Pioneer To End TV Production, Spin Off DVD Development

Pioneer plans to completely pull out of the television market in face of the poor economy, according to a report in Japan's Nikkei newspaper.

The company had already announced plans to end production of plasma display panels but was intending to continue producing TV sets using panels from Panasonic. But the harsh economic conditions have now pushed the company to leave the TV market, the newspaper said in its Saturday morning edition.

The PDP TV market is expected to grow by 5 percent in 2009 to 14.6 million units, according to an estimate from DisplaySearch. That's sharply down from the 24 percent growth experienced in 2008 and is falling because of competition from LCD TVs and fewer PDP TV makers in the market.

Pioneer will also spin off its DVD player business to a new joint venture that will be formed with Sharp, according to the report.

Pioneer is scheduled to report its financial results for the October-to-December quarter on Feb. 12.

I highly question that this is correct, however stranger things have been known to happen.

I wish I had a 9g. I had planned on upgrading my 768p Elite to a 1080p Elite somewhere down the line, but it looks like that won't happen now.

If this is in fact true, it could have an adverse affect on the whole Plasma TV industry and further hurt Panasonic ultimately. Panasonic would lose the opportunity of making the Glass for Pioneer as well as the technical advancement in the industry that is provided by Pioneer.

They just demo'd their new panels and I believe their new LCDs at CES too I think.

Sad.

The LCD is going to be the death of all other technologies until something comes along that is cheaper.

Cheap, cheap, cheap. That is the way we are headed.

I wonder if this is going to positively affect current model Kuros prices or negatively. If this causes a price drop, I will definitely move up to the 6020. It's sad news, but looking at the 5020, I can honestly say the picture is so good I don't see myself upgrading until OLED or something like that is a reality in sizes 50" and up. I too hope they at least go through with their upcoming BD players. I was looking forward to getting the mid range one.

I think it would be a great idea to buy a 9G now. If I had the money, I would buy a 9G and move my 8G elsewhere in the house.

I'd still get a 9G if you were planning on it & can find one. You won't be left hang if it needs something in 7yrs time. You won't have it that long anyway...well maybe.

Oh dear, very sad news.

Not surprising in the least, Pioneer couldn't make Plasma work (business-wise) in the good time, they haven't got a hope in hell during a recession.

Come on OLED, we need you now more than ever!

Price was the factor with Pioneer. There manufacturing costs were just to high. & theres no way in heck OLED will be cheaper. OLED will not help one bit...(unfortunately) OLED has been around since the 70's & it's still going to need more time. This hurts all the way around, it's never good to lose the best of anything & when its Pioneer & you love BD it's the worst.
