Quantum Theory To Convince Third Party Developers

You may have heard of a game called Quantum Theory that Tecmo has been developing exclusively for the PlayStation 3. It is said to be a Gears of War rip off, but who would not want a Gears of War type of game on the PlayStation 3? When you look at what the developers have said about the PlayStation 3, it seems like third party support might make a quick turnaround, in this case, because the PlayStation 3 is the more powerful console.

Making a game is not easy; developers began by developing their games on the Xbox 360 first, and then porting it over to the PlayStation 3, most likely to end up as a bad port. Now, many multiplatform titles are being developed on the PlayStation 3 and then ported over to the Xbox 360 making the games nearly identical. Developers have stated that when they start on the PlayStation 3, they can make a better multiplatform game because they do not have to worry about porting from Xbox 360 to PlayStation 3. What happens when developers get passed the “strange architecture” of the PlayStation 3 and utilize its power? The outcome is incredible and this allows for more “revolutionary” titles. Sony’s first party developers have shown us the light with the power of the PlayStation 3 and what it can really do. They have even stated that they can produce a more powerful game than Killzone 2 which is already the best looking title to date. All it takes is hard work and you will get a promising outcome that was well worth the time and effort.

So how can Quantum Theory convince third party support? Well first off, the game is exclusive to the PlayStation 3 and is made by a third party developer. Now if this game turns out to be a great game and follows what Tecmo has said about it not being half assed, it could possibly convince third party developers to take more time to learn about the PlayStation 3’s potential. If developers feel that they can produce a better game on the PlayStation 3, they will choose the PlayStation 3 as their lead platform. This will also end the “bad port” era for the PlayStation 3 and possibly lead to more exclusives for the console. Just look at Metal Gear Solid 4, it is a third party game but in this case, the developers were highly skilled in this area whereas you have Tecmo that has never developed a shooter before. If Tecmo pulls this off, it could change the future of our games.
I hope 3rd party Devs start making more PS3 exclusives that use the power of the PS3 too!

What do you guys think?

Definitely.. Hands down the best looking games this generation are the PS3 exclusives. Unfortunately it makes the most sense for 3rd party company's to make multiplatform games, typically they don't cator to the PS3's strenghts as a result but to a common ground for both systems.

what I hope happens is devs keep making successful multiplatform games that make alot of money, then have the devs use some of that money to develop exclusives for the PS3

Well, even though it's not my kind of game. I think I'll have to buy this game, just to make a 3rd party some money for making a game exclusively on the ps3

Or they use that money to develop more multi games and make a lot more money...

They days of third party exclusives are done, the only way a third party will do an exclusive game is if you pay for all development and promo costs.

at least if this works out, then we will start getting better versions of games, and not bad ports from the 360, and hopefully people will start to see the power of the console and the 360 fanboyism will be squashed a little, i can hope right???

PS2 was the least capable system last gen (though the gap is bigger this gen in abilities and what has been delivered so far graphically)and had even great market share than the Wii does this gen.

Big difference though is the PS2 had the best library by far last generation and the Wii doesn't this gen, the PS3 has the best library despite being in last. Wii does have the most games (lots of crap).

I was actually hoping this was some stupid Xbox fanboy criticism of PS3 and how it fails. Those and their responses are always fun to read.

Anyway, on topic, I also think the age of third party exclusives is coming to a close. It's a good thing SCE has a bunch of first and second party IPs.

That is a shame, cuz I wana see more games that look and play like Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2

......Well atleast we know Sony and crew is willing to push the graphics envelope and make everyone else look bad! lol

There are still a few third-party developers out there with the desire and freedom to push a single platform for maximum quality.

Sony have let me down this generation. It seems they have geared themselves up more for the mainstream. PS2 was about versatility in games and some companies took chances.

I Don't mind if the next AAA title is a GOW rip off. I do mind when every AAA title becomes an FPS or soldier game though. Am I becoming a rare breed of gamer wanting developers to utilize skills on genre's that are perhaps not the latest craze? FPS is such an over crowded market, but you all still go out and buy all of them even if you play them for 2 or 3 hours.

Mind you, I have to concede PSN games are quite random and adventurous. Flower was awesome whilst it lasted.

It seems Sony are still in the lead for a versatile library, but sadly the industry is gearing up for the next Gears of War or Killzone 2 and that just bores me to tears.

I'm not seeing any evidence of the big change from PS2 that you're experiencing.

PS3 just has great FPS' now too.

Yeah, unfortunately to cater to (sorry, but it seems true to me) the North American audience -specially the teenage crowd-, Sony -had- to build a decent FPS game library.
It might have been at the expense of many other genras (most obviously the RPGs), but I think that things are a'changing, now that the PS3 has some real good shooters

Which really makes me question it being a 'third party' title then .

Less RPGs :'(. On a side note I finally found Valkyria Chronicles! £27.97 at Asda

Otherwise it is very a very similar range.

Well, if it is published by the IP holder (like Infinite Undiscovery) then it would be classed as third party, but if it is published by the platform holder (like Ninja Gaiden 2 or Gears 1/2) then it is second party.

The simple fact is that this gen PS3 and 360 count as a single platform (HD) and the Wii/PSP/DS count as the other platform (non-HD). As long as the HD consoled maintain a WW market share of 45-50% and PS3 takes a significant chunk of it, third parties won't be able to ignore the user base.

Also, game engines and HD games development is becoming more mature every year and costs are decreasing to PS2 like levels for third parties, so with that in mind there would be little to no reason for a Wii exclusive unless it had extensive use of the motion controls.

Ah ya said Infinite Undiscovery, was thinking Lost Odysssey/Mistwalker games.

It's an interesting distinction, but really seems an arbitrary one for the intent I meant. The difference seems more like the developer has been given freedom to fail by the stakeholder. If development cost has been subsumed by a single entity, really feels like that entity is the primary 'customer', even if they maintain the IP rights. Not really considering the probably 'true' accurate categorizations between type of title, just the reason why they are different [all the funds are fronted by the console maker ].

Fun goofy side-question though. Mass Effect was released under the MGS brand, wonder how that falls into place there. 2nd party that diverged to 3rd party?

Good news for the PS3. It's amazing how with a little time with the PS3, multiplatforms are now being made first for the PS3, then are being ported over.

As for Quantum Theory, it looks interesting. Not sure if I'd buy, but would definitely give it a rent.
