Personally, I have never been a big fan of 5 and 7 channel amps. I know that a lot of people are. The reason that I am not is because I also use my amps for my 2 channel stereo. If that is part of your purpose, consider that fact. If you use the amp for 2 channel playback you are also using an additional 3 to 5 channels all of the time. That is why I prefer having either monoblock amps or stereo amps for the front channels and a 3 channel amp for the other 3 channels in a 5.1 Home Theater. In a 7.1 Home Theater though a 5 channel amp would work well if you also had a stereo amp used for your front L and R speakers.

If you are going to use the amp exclusively for a Home Theater, a 5 or even 7 channel amp may make sense for you however. If you use a 7 channel amp in a 5.1 Home Theater that would allow you to bi-amp your front L and R speaker.
