Default My left surround speaker is making a noise?

I was watching Pineapple Express the other night and throughout the movie I kept hearing this popping type sound from the left surround only (5.1 setup). It sounds like a lid to a trashcan being dropped shut. I dunno how else to explain it.

It doesn't happen all the time. For example, I am watching Boondock Saints and at the beginning it did it about 5-6 times over 10 minutes then an hour went by without hearing it and it did it another 5-6 times over 5 minutes. When I watched Pineapple Express it did it for about 10 times during a 15 minute period and stopped.

Sounds like a blown speaker.

A solid whack with a hammer or club should do the trick.

Seriously though, I'm guessing you've double checked your wire connections for this speaker on the speaker itself and at the receiver? I would also recommend checking the entire run of speaker wire to make sure it isn't damaged anywhere, and finally switching this speaker with your other surround speaker and run them like that to see if it keeps happening. This will help isolate where the problem is. If it starts popping on the other side we know it's the speaker, and if it continues popping on the same side then it looks like the receiver is the culprit. Good luck.

Well I clipped the end off on the speaker end and cut a smaller piece of the outer casing off so almost no wire is bare and after an hour of watching the rest of Boondock Saints I didn't hear it, but that doesn't mean it's solved. I watched Pineapple Express and it didn't do it for over an hours time.

I don't think it's the speaker itself because it doesn't do it when I am watching TV, only on HD audio codecs.

I have the same reciever. You may need to check with onkyo and see if there is a firmware upgrade. Apparantly there is one for 'popping' sounds.

The DTS bomb you're referring to is not the same at all as what he's describing. That's a very loud "pop" or "boom" that is heard across all speakers when decoding DTS-HD MA.

I get this from time to time with certain on demand play backs

"on demand" as in cable on demand broadcasts? That's probably a loss in the signal or other anomaly since they're broadcasting in DD 5.1 at best.

Yeah cable. It only happens once in a blue moon and its always on the same show. Not much loss at my house I had them install a 8 db booster because it was reading 150' of loss in 25', for whatever reason

Well it happened last night during television so there goes that theory. It really doesn't sound like a bad speaker, which I have heard before. It could be, but I really don't think it is based on the sound.

I clipped the ends where the banana plugs go into the receiver and redid the banana plug feeding and didn't hear anything since, but we will wait and see.
