Default Warner to Release ALL Upcoming Catalog Titles with TrueHD Audio

From today's "My Two Cents" at TheDigitalBits.

"From this point on, Warner intends to release all catalog BDs with Dolby TrueHD audio. (They've taken note of complaints about the lack of one on Casablanca.) Gone with the Wind, Woodstock, The Wizard of Oz and North by Northwest will all be released on Blu-ray later this year."

Outstanding news... obviously something that irked many MANY people (including myself). Looks like making your opinion known can make a difference... even if it's just shiny discs.

That's a good start. Now they need to keep DNR and EE from ruining the picture quality.

I read that the other day on TheDigitalBits. It's interesting that it says "catalog BDs" though. Does that imply that new releases could still lack lossless audio?

Not sure but probably not... you'd think catalog titles would be the baseline and new releases would be as good or better. But then... as others have stated DNR and EE are still something being used so you never know.

Give the people what they want. Give the people DolbyTrue HD and let them eat cake.

This is good news.

Maybe Warner finally figured out "Hey...are we the only ones doing this? Are we....'not with it'?"

Lossless ftw! They should have done it from the start. I didn't participate in the boycott and have a decent amount of crappy non-lossless bd's. At least they're getting the picture.

Great news. Now I'd like to see higher bit rates from WB on the video side. Not that a low bitrate necessarily means lesser quality, but every little bit counts. Warner consistently gives us Blus with low bitrates (compared to others, like Uni and Paramount), which is likely a holdover from their encodings for HD DVD, but there's no excuse now.

So my constant haranguing of Warner about their audio finally paid off. I will believe it when I see it though. We have gotten these promises before and not seen change. And I am sick and tired of the excuse that these discs were authored years ago before the switch. If a lossy encode exists, trash it and put a lossless track on there.

The Departed is a high want in lossless. I don't think any of the Kubrick films had TrueHD some had PCM. I doubt we'll see new releases of those for a while though.

The only issue I have with TrueHD is when I "pause" the playback for taking screenshots, there is a slight delay. It is really annoying when trying to freeze at a certain place. This effect is not present with other audio formats. Other than that, TrueHD is great.
