It was a different time then, those guys where hard core !!

Anyways it's still a classic American film and I would rather watch this than any of the high school musical crud.

West Side Story as a stage production was responsible for completely changing the course of musical theatre. Without it, there would never have been a theatre for the general public. It would have all still remained operatic and foreign language presentations... which I always find is poor entertainment in live performance due to the over indulgence of "indicating" by the performers. It's like listening to a sunset but seeing a thunderstorm!

West Side Story will always have my utmost respect as a work of art that deserves way more credit than it will ever get... regardless of the format or era in which it is presented.

P.S. A modern remake would be very interesting. Updating the context from the 1950's to the new millenium would be a fascinating, if not Hurculean, task.

not overrated in the slightest bit--

of course today, younger audiences would find this movie dated (as they
would a lot of older movies) but I for one, don't like too many musicals--
and this wonderful movie I could watch again and again. The songs are great, the choreography is excellent, the story is involving, the ending
would make most people bawl their head off --- day 1 purchase on blu
ray when it's announced!

Great except for Natalie Wood not being able to sing or dance to save her life.

Good point. Does that lessen West Side's hold on Best Picture?

Of the five, which would you choose.

Bruce, Bruce, Bruce. You can't do this to me.

You titled the thread "West Side Story: Overrated?", so I had my answer all set to go in the poll, and after I submitted it, I realized the poll was "Should it have won Best Picture" which is a completely different question than what I thought I was answering. Oh well. Disregard my vote.

Anyway, I think it deserved the award. The Hustler is the only nominee that is in the same league with it, but I can see how it ended up the way it did.

Sorry Toefer. I didn't know how re-title a thread? Is that possible?

Anyway, so what would you have chosen?

I think it's not overrated. It may seem a little dated now, but I think it's easily one of the top musicals of all time, along with Singin' in the Rain, and The Wizard of Oz (if you count that).

My thoughts exactly. Those are the two genuine masterpieces of the five. IMO.

Oh man, I saw that movie in school when I was in 8th grade. I liked it, but then again, anything's better than hearing my 8th grade teacher talking.
