Unhappy Sony Vaio laptop Blu-Ray reading problem

Hi guys,

I have a problem here.. Lemme explain

Im using a Sony Vaio VGN-FW170J which comes with a blu-ray player/tray/whatever.

I have blu-ray movies, concerts which i can play on my PS3 just fine. But when it comes to this laptop i can't play the movies. None of them. I CAN play the concert blu-rays which are Alice Cooper-Live at Montreux and Korn-Live at Montreux. But i can't play movies such as The Spider-Man Trilogy, Day of The Dead, Halloween, The Dark Knight etc..

Weird thing is that the bonus blu-ray disc of Spider-Man 3 works just fine along with the concert blu-ray's. No frame-rate issues nothing..

I tried the Intervideo WinDVD which came with the laptop and the PowerDVD and Arcsoft Total Media Theater etc. which you guys mentioned over here. NOTHING. I can NOT play movies. I get the NO DISC message and when i press play, nothing happens.

Also there is a sticker on top of my laptop saying,

''Certain circumstances may limit compatibility or prevent Blu-Ray Disc Playback. Vaio computers may not support movie playback on packaged media recorded in AVC or VC1 formats at high bit rates.''

Note: This computer uses MATSHITA BD-CMB UJ-120 player/device to play the discs. And ive tried upgrading the WindDVD etc. nothing.

I hope someone can help me. Thanks guys.

Interesting post here. I saw your laptop and looking at it as I type. Everything is fine on your laptop except for one thing I just still don't like. ATI BUILT-IN videocard. I have a Fujitsu laptop and I had so many problems upgrading the drivers. I would take it back just because it sports and ATI onboard videocard. I'm don't with ATI for the most part. I mean, the driver issue continues to haunt people every single day and it gets worse. That's just my honest opinion. Secondly, your system rocks. Lastly, some newer disc are a bit fuzzy. Meaning, every time I put in the Transformers HD-DVD(Awesome picture quality) I have the internet up because I know there's a prompt up for web-based updating content. This is just how PC Blu-Ray/HD-DVD drives act in my opinion. I can just say check those ATI drivers and see what version of the Catalyst drivers they are. Sometimes there's improvements in the documentation(read me) file they provide with the updated drivers. Man, I wish I had your system. One last thing, go to this site:

http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php

Look for the drive you have. There might be even a firmware for your drive already. Good luck and I will never stop trying to help people in these forums. May the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD and sound be with you. Peace out.

Can you browse the content of the disc by using Windows Explorer?
Have you tried upgrading the driver from INTEL site http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...%2032&lang=eng

I did see that there was a choice of the two graphics cards for the system. My mistake. I would have to say go to Son'y's website or Intel's website to see if they updated the drivers for the on board GPU. In addition, cut off everything in the background while running any blu-ray based movie or application. I hope this works out for you Laufeyson. Let me know what happens okay? Take care.

I had the same problem and I just fixed it.

Go to the Sony website and go to the support area, enter your model number, select bluray. It provided me two files to download. One is over 100 MB, the other is maybe 1MB? The second one is what fixed it, but I installed the first file as well. So, it may have been the combination that fixed it.

HOWEVER... just these two files doesn't fix it completely. Once I installed those two files and restarted my computer and intervideo, I was then prompted to update my ACCS key at the corel website. I then had to register at that site. After registration, I restarted the whole intervideo thing and then it did an automatic update. Now it works.

Was a pain in the butt... but it's fixed.

I dumped the Intervideo WinDVD BD for VAIO a long time ago and went with a full Retail version.
I have all three BD players.
Corel WinDVD 9
PowerDVD 9
ArcSoft TMT 3(but may just go back to 2 because of the Dolby thing).

Both of my VAIOs work fine.
I prefer ArcSoft over the others, but it's nice to have choices.
