I have a question about how to solve my problem now that I have a PS3 and a STB (cable box) with optical audio but a reciever with only 1 optical in. Correction I have found a "manual" 3 way selector switch at various places on the web. But I refuse to believe that in this day and age I have to put up with getting up and changing the selector every time I switch between the two. I thought of mounting it on the wall next to the couch, but thats a lot of work to make it look half way decent... So you know were I'm going with this.... Ideally I would like to have a selector that automaticly sees a signal from a device that is on and switches to that device, or if need be a selector that has a little remote that can be used to select the device you wish. Can anyone help me? have you seen one out their?

does your tv have an optical output? what I did was put both hdmi cables into my tv then used the optical out on the tv to go to my receiver. that way the tv acted as the switch only outputting audio from the device you are watching. that is if your tv has the optical out.

Most TVs that have this feature would mess with the original signal when it passes it back out via optical out. 5.1 Dolby Digital will be turned to either 2.0 PCM or DD.
As to the OP query, my cursory check results in a US$199 switcher with a remote. It's a Toslink and Coaxial switcher. No high marks for the design. Monoprice.com has a manual switcher for US$8 - compact, simple and cheap. The other option is you get a Toslink-to-Coaxial converter if you have more Coaxial inputs on your reciever. If you don't have that many digital inputs of either Toslink or Coaxial, I think it's time you consider a receiver upgrade. fuad |
