Default Heroes: How the mighty have fallen

How the mighty have fallen. NBC’s Heroes was one of the big hits of the 2006-07 season, seemingly ensuring a very long and successful run. But, the series seems to have lost its way and many viewers have complained about confusing or ridiculous storylines. Even worse, many others have just stopped watching altogether. With ratings at an all time low, does the series have a chance at returning for season four?

The sci-fi series debuted on September 25, 2006 to 14.3 million viewers and a 5.9/14 rating/share of 18-49 demographic. It was the highest-rated premiere for an NBC drama in five years. Though viewership fell to just 12.57 million in episode two, word of mouth started to kick in. On November 20th, episode nine reached just over 16 million viewers and a 6.9/16. Unfortunately, it went on hiatus a few weeks later. The numbers began to dwindle when it returned in early 2007 and, by May, Heroes hit a series low of 11.14 million and a 5.1/13.

Season two started off strong on September 24, 2007 with 14.1 million viewers and a 6.5/15. That didn’t last and viewership began to fall once again. The writers strike caused the season to be shortened so only 11 episodes were made, averaging just 11.3 million. The honeymoon was certainly over by that time and the network scrapped its plans to create a spin-off series, Heroes: Origins.

Season three has been the show’s most troubled season yet. Heroes returned on September 22, 2008 to 10.09 viewers and the ratings have been falling ever since. The show has been getting hammered by the combination of CBS’ comedy block, ABC’s The Bachelor, and FOX’s 24. Monday’s installment was no exception. It landed in fourth place and attracted just 6.59 million and 2.4/6 in the demo.

Will the show return for season four? It seems fairly likely. The show is co-produced by Universal Media Studios, part of NBC’s parent company. At the end of season three, they’ll have 60 episodes of the show completed. Ideally, a series needs more than that to be attractive to affiliates in the syndication market, where a production company can make the most money from a show. NBC also has very few hit shows so they aren’t likely to throw Heroes away just yet, especially with its demo numbers. Rest assured though, if Heroes was airing on either CBS or ABC, it surely would have been cancelled awhile ago.

Going against Heroes’ future is the fact that times are tough and the show’s not cheap. Because Jay Leno will be filling the five hours of primetime each week, there will be far fewer slots available on the NBC schedule.

At this point, it looks like the peacock network will renew Heroes for 13 episodes. If ratings keep falling though, they may decide to cut their losses. One way or the other though, it looks like the days of Heroes are certainly numbered.

I had such high hopes for this show.

Started out loving this show and then came one of the most disappointing finale episodes ever. Actually I think it is the most disappointing season finale I've ever seen. That fight at the end of season one was so hyped so anticipated by fans and then we got the worst, lamest fight ever. Season 2 started off decent and then started going crazy and they started to lose me as a viewer. Season 3 came and I gave it a few episodes and then decided it was over for me as a viewer of Heroes. Haven't watched since. I do sometimes check out threads on it to see what is happening and it doesn't seem like I'm missing much. During the first season I though Heroes was gonna be one of the greatest shows of all time, boy how I was wrong.

I recently quit watching this show.

Characters kept losing powers and regaining powers.
Characters kept going from good to bad to good then bad.
Characters were dead, then alive, then dead, then alive.

It got so repetitive and dull that I gave up. The actors and production quality are so great. It's unfortunate that they will all suffer for terrible writing after season 1.

Same thing is happening with Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles.

All of this has happened before, and will happen again.

I have to concur with all of your points. No one knew it at the time, but the lack of talent by the creative staff started revealing itself in that last episode in season one. I was bitterly disappointed by it and it has been all downhill since that time. I think this would get canceled if it was on another network but NBC is struggling.

I still watch the show every Monday but the quality in this season is a mixed bag, some episodes are very good but some are just awful and they have to fix all the plot-holes. I consider Season 1 to be the best first season of any show and I actually liked Season 2 despite the writer's strike rush job. Volume 3 started good but really got bad fast (once Papa P entered ) however it ended strongly and had so much potential for volume 4. Unfortuantely, Volume 4 has not lived up to the hype, the episodes have all just been okay (last monday's was quite good actually) and I'm sick of the writers changing origin stories and continuing with the stupid situations.

All in all, I still have faith that Heroes can return to do good, they just need to shake up the universe and hire new writers to bring new energy.

Pardon the rant but I just wanted to share my opinion.

I am also one that has since quit watching Heroes. I loved it at the beginning, but found it to be a chore rather than a pleasure to watch as of late. And just to drive my point home, this is the only show that I have quit watching mid-run. I even continue to watch Prison Break and that show is garbage. Anyone else who watches it knows what I mean.

Heroes is a text book on how to ruin a great show. I use to love this show but last season I removed it from my Tivo settings

i loved it when Sylar was good and a Petrelli and then they made him bad and it was pretty gay (i know hes a good villain but i liked him good). Peter losing his powers was gay, They need more Hiro and bring his powers back, no more new characters and less Claire i hate to say. Kill Nathan and that douchbag bald guy from volume 4

I loved season one, but stopped watching it during season 3. The Hiro digression as a character did me in. I loved his character in season one, but the 10 year old Hiro storyline in season 3 was incredibly cheesy and lame.

Only thing wrong with TV these days are the viewers. In the spring of 2010 we will hear all of them screaming their lungs off on "how dare they cancel Heroes, use to watch this show all the time"

The show went retarded with record speed. I stuck with season 2 hoping that it would kind of pick up again but honestly season 3 is such a train wreck, it makes season 2 look decent in retrospect. When all the baddies started going good and the goodies bad and back and forth, I just lost all interest in the show.

Once they played fast and loose with the time line(s) all bets were off. The consistency of the Heroes universe went spinning off into who-gives-a-****.

Bingo. I remember before the finale saying to somebody that the finale would set the tone for the rest of the series. 24 had a dark season one finale where all bets were off for future seasons as to who lives, who dies, etc. but Heroes by taking the safe route and going with the happy (and really really lame) ending told everybody exactly how many risks they were willing to take. By not taking risks and at least giving the audience some reason to be worried about the BIG threat every season I have no reason to care for this show if I know every season they're going to prevail. Sometimes the villains need to win some battles. If anything, the show could have had the good guys come up short since they WERE still new heroes discovering their powers. Build season two as a recovery how they learn to get better and better. Instead, we got them all saving the world without issue, where do you go from there? Equal threats, equal resolutions? Same season over and over again? Plus Peter and Nathan flying away and the anticlimatic Sylar fight was just horrible. My sister called me right at the end and I just told her "I'm done". Which wasn't true cause I watched the first two or three of season two and THEN bailed entirely.

I don't think NBC will cancel it, this is the same channel that hung on to Scrubs all those seasons! If this were Fox, it would have been cancelled a year ago.

I love Heroes! I think all of you simply couldn't keep up with what was going on so instead of understanding it you have to bad mouth it. Reminds me of elementary school... the nerds always get picked on by the jocks. One of the stereotypes is smart.. the other side is dumb. Which one do you see yourself being right now?
