I have never set up an AVR before and just about cried when I saw the number of inputs and outputs. I do use the info on this site and it has been invaluable and I cannot imagine where I have gone wrong. I am not in any way electronics-savvy and only mention that in the hope that potential respondents will not be afraid to "dumb down" their answers. So please be gentle or kindly direct me to another thread as my initial Search attempts did not yield me an answer [END DISCLAIMER] Here goes:
I just hooked up a Pioneer Elite VSX-01 TXH AVR and am able to hear audio through the speakers but cannot get a video signal, not even the OSD to set the thing up. Specifically, Sony 34XBR970 CRT >Pio AVR's HDMI OUT Ps3>Pio AVR's HDMI IN Oppo DV-970HD>Pio AVR's HDMI IN 2 Def Tech Studio Monitor 450s to Pio AVR if that matters I even plugged in my old VCR: VCR >Pio's DVR1 slot using RCA for a/v and got audio and no video All power cords > APC H15 What is weird to me, I had the same source components (minus VCR) hooked up to a Sima VS-HD31 Switcher using the same HDMI cables and all worked. Now I know my Sony 970 is only a 1080i set and has only the 1 HDMI IN but it was also working with the Sima 3x1. It was suggested to me that the Inputs have to be reassinged. But when I cannot ever get to the OSD which I presume to be on the TV for initial setup, what should I do? This has frustrated me to the point of I'm wondering if I'd been better off not getting into audio at all. At least before I was watching my BDs albeit in 1080i and listening over the TV speakers. ![]() I have read and re-read the manual and it seems to only confuse me even more. Please any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading |

Edit: Man I must be tired. you answered my question in your initial post....
Ok. There is a bit of a quirk with some Elite's where the tv has to be on before you turn on the AVR, otherwise it won't detect the tv and output video. Mine does this occasionally, but I set a delay up on my universal remote and has largely eliminated this. If its not this, or a combination of that with an assignment issue: again, you should be able to see the menu items on the AVR screen Hit Setup on your remote Then use the directional pad on the remote to go down to 6. Input Setup Enter (center button) This is where you can assign. My receiver has 'HDMI 1, HDMI 2, and BD' as HDMI input options. The left/right directional pad cycles through the inputs. HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 will allow you to rename or change power triggers by using the down directional pad, then left/right. If you want your tv assigned to the TV Sat or DVR input, then you will get other options when you press the down button (Digital in -OFF, HDMI Input -assign to where your cable is plugged in with directional left/right, Component In -OFF) Last edited by Slec; 03-14-2009 at 02:37 AM. |

With the exception of Slec's comment I have suggested several courses of action to my dear friend here in West Florida

Get the assignments straightened out as in part 2 above...
Then turn everything off. Turn it on as usual. If you get sound, but no video then turn the AVR off, count to 5 (should hear a second click), then turn it back on. If the assignments are setup, you'll get a picture. I had to do this fairly frequently at first, but no longer. it's an odd quirk for sure, but a slight delay has made mine cease. ![]() I'll be watching basketball most of the weekend with laptop nearby. post here or PM as you guys are trouble shooting. I'm happy to help however I can. ~Chris |

OP - Put your PS3 in the BD HDMI slot (ask one of the PS3 users how to set your PS3 up - it will need to be set for LPCM audio - not bitstream. Put your Oppo DVD player into Hdmi 1 Only connect these 2 things at this time. Under your HDMI audio option make sure that Through is NOT SELECTED. Make sure that HDMI Control is set to off (you have a Sony TV) and make sure that your resolution setting is set to Auto. Don't give up hope yet. It will be worth the trouble. |

but, when you turn the TV on just make sure you're set to the correct input first, then turn on the receiver. This might not resolve your issue, but is always good advice to turn TV on first. If you use a universal remote, you should be able to program the TV to turn on first. (at least with Harmony's that I know of) |

Experienced people that I have just been in contact with have informed me that there is a Handshake issue especially when the XBR uses its scaler to upconvert to 720p and 1080i. The native resolution of the XBR is actually 480p type but will do HD resolutions (like my old sharp projector did). The Auto resolution should help you - maker sure that its not on Pure.

belay my last.
The SR+ connection is a proprietary connection, and nothing to do with HDMI. Its crazy, Im reading through the Pioneer 01 user manual, and its not very clear on how to set the HDMI output. Im actually confused. (don't tell anyone!) ...somewhere, somehow, you must set the HDMI Output to the TV for your assigned Input. Usually associated with the term "Monitor Out" etc Last edited by crackinhedz; 03-14-2009 at 03:56 AM. |

Manual says HDMI Control setting can be changed from on/off...just does not (IMO) give a clear cut way on how to do that.....still investigating.....and NVM found it...HDMI CONTROL was on and has now been switched off....turned everything off and tried again....still only Audio, no video Resolution setting set to Auto....not sure how to change this (on AVR or PS3?) Did try turning tv on 1st....got Audio when Turned on PS3 but no video edit: found setting for resolution in avr...trying now 2nd edit:hmmmm...when I press Video Parameter on remote to access the video options...dispaly says "CANNOT SELECT"; manual says "Note that if a setting doesn't appear in the Video Parameter menu, it is unavailable due to the current source, setting and status of the receiver." pp. 74 Setting the Video Options Last edited by jaymzbo; 03-14-2009 at 04:40 AM. |

that is frustrating; I'd really like to try to change its resolution to AUTO but it won't let me...says "CANNOT SELECT" when I press VIDEO PARAMETER on the remote meaning I cannot change or even see any of the video options
anyone know why that is? edit: the manual does say the Default option will be in Bold and out of the choices in the manual : Auto, Pure, 480p/576p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p Auto is in bold. So at least according to the manual Auto should have already been selected. But wouldn't it be nice to check that Last edited by jaymzbo; 03-14-2009 at 04:52 AM. |

As for the tv input question from earlier: The beauty of the receiver is that everything gets put on the tv on one input. The receiver has its own inputs that you change based on the source. It will do all the mess for you. |

As far as assignments go, the Ps3 seems to be in the right one by default (BD on the AVR) I renamed it SONY PS3. Oppo was in HDMI 1 In other news I did get the OSD to show up on the tv last night using component cable from AVR's Monitor Out to TV's Component In (External Input 5) on the sony. It still will not let me select Video Parameter (pp 11-12 on manual) on the AVR when there is a HDMI cable connected therefore not let me access Setting the Video Options including Resolution which is supposed to be on AUTO by default. But when I had it hooked up by component and no HDMI, I could select Video Parameter but the only option I had to choose from was V. CONV (the rest: BRIGHT, CONTRAST, HUE, CHROMA, RES, ASP; were not available to me EDIT: did the PS3 power button till it beeped a few times....same thing Audio=fine; no video 2nd edit: unplugged the ps3 and plugged Oppo to HDMI1; audio....no video Last edited by jaymzbo; 03-14-2009 at 04:25 PM.
