Default My new Onkyo 576

Hi,

So Ive been asking for a lil bit about receivers which will give me HD audio with my PS3. After many great suggestions and help, I decided to go with the Onkyo 576.

I finally picked this up on Thurs and set it up today.

Wow! Does it ever sound good, even on just regular tv, the clarity and crispness is much improved over my last receiver!

I do have a couple questions for those who have this same receiver:

1. The different listening modes, like the Neo and DD don't appear to come up when I cycle thru. I just have All Ch St, stereo, etc. How do you get these?

2. When I did the Audessy setup, it set my speakers to around -6db for each one, is this normal? That seemed pretty low so I individually changed each one to be a bit higher.

ive found that if your in a smaller room the audyssey setup will set the speakers very low, i had to change mine individually as well. as for the listening modes, It depends on your source. Like if your using the PS3 set to PCM (which is what it should be if your using HDMI) then theres only certain modes available to you. the full spectrum of listening modes will available with other components.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know why those other modes arent available? I would think that since we are using the best setup then all the modes would be available?

Thanks

Default Listening Modes

Hi,

I saw what you mean regarding the diff listening modes only being available at certain times. It looks like when the signal is NOT dolby digital, then it defaults to 5.1 Pro logic. What Im wondering is that on the receiver remote, there isn't a way to scroll thru all the listening modes. There are 4 diff buttons and each one has a few of the listening modes; On my old Onkyo, I could scroll thru all the listening modes with just one button,

have you found a way to do this?

also as you noted, the audessy setup made some odd choices, Im wondering what you ended up setting your speakers on. I still have mine in the negatives though up considerably from the suggested settings.

Thanks!

It terms of the audyssey, i did what you did. Mine are still in the negitive as well just not as far down as the setup put them. Im going to manually calibrate them soon, but untill then it sounds fine. As for the remote, my 605 had 1 button that allowed you to scroll through all of them as well but with the new remotes i think they split them up into the categories in an attempt to be more organized.

It sets them that low as it's trying to calibrate them to 75db; I realized this when I played the test tones on my 805 and used an SPL meter, and they were very close to 75db thanks to Audyssey. My 605's test tones were not set up in this way- they were very quiet. As a whole, there's a reason for it.

If you move them all up at the same rate, it's not really hurting anything, but you are changing what volume will be "reference".

What is considered reference on the Onkyo's, when your not using the normal 0 db on most receivers. My 506 goes from 0 to 79. Is there a way of changing the scale on Onkyo's

Does anyone know what the different volume scales are commonly called ?

My 506 using Audyssey has everything set between -6 and -4. The only thing I changed with Audyssey is I turned the sub down from -5 to -6, -7db. Depending on the movie. I also backed off on the surrounds about 3 db. I also changed the mains to small with an 80hz crossover.

Other than these changes I like what Audyssey does. It seems to have a more cohesive wrap around surround effect.

They call it "absolute" on the 805. There's no way to change it on the 606 and lower models. I believe it goes up to 80, so you could theoretically correlate that with +18db I guess.

i re-ran auddsey tonight and it came out alot better, i think cause it was dead silent. i did change the frequencies though, as always it puts my mains on full band, and i put them back to 80.
