I have a Sony BDP - S350 Blue Ray with the following settings activated:
Audio Output priority - Coaxial/Optical Audio HDMI - Auto BD Audio Settings - Mix Audio ATT - Off Dolby Digital - Dolby Digital DTS - DTS Audio DRC - Wide Downmix - Dolby Surround Most of the movies i have work great, however just recently i have ran into 3 that do not. Transporter 3, Mirrors, and Twilight have all given me either no sound, or very low crappy sound. Wierd thing is, it sounds great during the previews and menus and such, then when the movie starts nothing. However another strange thing is the other languages sound just like normal, but when i switch to english.....nothing. I cant figure this out for the life of me, anyone know what is happening, this is getting very frustrating. Thanks. |

It's never just one thing. How is this player connected? Directly to the HDTV or receiver? What kind of receiver? What kind of connection?

Make sure you only have one audio output coming from the sony to the receiver. Does your receiver accept HDMI (audio) and accept at least 5.1 PCM. the reason the previews sound good is probably because they are recorded in just dolby digital, not TrueHD, DTS MA or PCM. You need to set your blu-ray settings for DTS and Dolby to the newer formats if possible.

My setup is HDMI from the tuner to TV, then HDMI cable from Blue Ray to TV, and Optical Cable from Blue ray to Tuner. My surround sound system is Panasonic SC-PT960.

I have the transporter 3 and have no problems, haven't tried mirrors yet but, i and many others on this site have had problems with twilight. the movie twilight has video and audio issues. sorry that i haven't tried mirrors or i'd let you know if it was a problem child too! if all your other movies play fine with the exception of these 3 then more than likley, it's either the physical discs or it's the encoding on the discs. do all your other movies play correctly? |

When you say "tuner", what do you mean? Is that your Panasonic SC-PT960?
You say you are connected with HDMI from your BD player to your TV and with optical from your BD player to your receiver. When watching a disc, do you select the video on your TV by choosing a particular HDMI input and do you select your audio separately on your receiver by choosing a specific optical input? That would be the usual approach with the connections you describe. I think your problem is DTS. On p9 of the manual for the SC-PT960 is says only DD and PCM can be played with the optical connection. It appears the DTS decoder is limited to discs played on the system's own DVD player. There are a fair number of BD movies that don't have Dolby soundtracks (foreign languages, yes, but not English DD tracks). With those discs, you will have to change the player's optical output for DTS to downmixed PCM. The player will send stereo PCM, which your receiver can handle. Then, you can apply ProLogic in your receiver to create surround sound. It won't be as good as discrete 5.1. But, that's the best you can do with that receiver. So, your player settings should be: Audio Outut Priority = Coaxial/Optical DTS = Downmixed PCM Dolby Digital = Dolby Digital Downmix = Dolby Surround The player will bitstream DD 5.1 to your receiver. It will decode DTS tracks into stereo PCM and send that to your receiver. The Dolby Surround downmix setting will help your receiver's ProLogic decoder create more realistic surround (the kind that was used on VHS in the old days).
