Sony to match dev budgets in return for exclusivity

Sony has kicked off a scheme today which will see it match the development budget of self-published games in return for PlayStation exclusivity.

The first game to take advantage of this deal is Doublesix's Burn Zombie Burn, which goes live via the PlayStation Network today, with Sony indicating it's "looking for a great many more titles" to take advantage of the fund.

"It's all very well for us as platform holders to say 'put all your money into PlayStation Network, it's a fantastic idea', but are we prepared to put or money where our mouth is? The answer is yes," Chris Eden, Sony's development relations manager, told an audience at the Game Developers Conference today.

"We're looking for a number of great games, and in return for exclusivity we'll match your development budget with guaranteed royalties," he said.

The scheme, called the Pub Fund, is a realisation of comments made to GamesIndustry.biz last year by Sony's David Reeves, who said that while exclusive deals with publishers is probably a thing of the past, there's scope for such a relationship with the development community.

Eden added that Sony is not buying titles directly from developers, and IP rights and control of any games will remain in the hands of the teams that create them.

"A really important thing to point out is that this is not first-party publishing, this is not Sony buying your product," he said.

"You'll be the publisher, you'll own the IP and you'll control your product. This is assisting you to make your next step from developer to publisher."

Sony is really stepping up to its competitor this year.

So if sony charges for DL fees but matches their spending 100% then companies should be fine. I mean they're getting a GREAT deal.

It's a better plan than what Apple's doing to their developers (read up on their refund policies; their plan can directly bankrupt the developers)

ps: it's just quite funny how the stupid hipsters around the world are supporting Apple because they think they are being "unique" and "caring for the independent artists" when Apple is screwing independent game developers like this.

and musicians and ... well everyone at times even the consumers.

those new laptops are a joke of a price. a new laptop design release so they can sell laptops just before a new chip is available. nice.

in any case, so if sony matches dev budget, and we know about it, microsoft with much deeper pockets can do better no?

Then we need to calculate trust, if your a new self published designer which party would you trust.

That goes down to the individual person level, how that person was raised and prior experience with the two companies...

Good news .

I have a suggestion .What if sony allows full use of the video card in the ps3 by linux (or maybe installing windows on the ps3 ) thus we will be able to get the

"games for windows"

I want to invest in the development kit...but it is so hard to find good help for the programming!
I have all the math and designs for the layout/battle engine (I'm working on an RPG ala FF Tactics) but I don't have the time to do everything all alone!

I think he meant potential games that use this.. future unknown games that have not been named yet + zombies burn which apparently they were the first to take sony up on the offer.
