My bet is that Sony bundles this year, and then cuts next year.

A preview just happened this weekend here in Canada. Future Shop sold a PS/3 6-GB + F1 Championship Racing + your choice of POTC I or II for the regular price.

The CAD$ has flown recently, which does give Sony Canada some leeway.

We got an extra 20 gig added to our hard drive.

I predict the price cut will be about 20 dollars.

A price cut and a new SKU are in order IMO but not at the same time. Price cut first, before Xmas, then a new SKU after called the 'Enthusiast PS3' with a bigger HDD and controversially more XDR, something like 512MB instead of 256MB as this is the single biggest drawback for people putting Linux onto the system. The extra XDR will of course not be available to game developers as it would create a split in the install base.

The new SKU would be priced at current levels as I think that many enthusiasts are willing to pay $600 for a Cell powered Linux workstation, and maybe Sony and Nvidia could remove the Hypervisor as well for the people on the 'enthusiast' box. Sony would make a profit on the hardware and will not need game subsidies for the purchase to make sense so they could remove the hypervisor without it effecting their bottom line too much

I think another good poll question would be, how much will the price cut be when it does come...

My vote is that since usually Sony makes large first price cuts, the PS3 will be available $499 as is or with more features than currently available.

Even the $599 price tag is cheap for what you are getting. There will be no price cuts, it would not make sense from a marketing standpoint, especially is Sony wishes to keep their name in good shape.

I voted by year's end on the condition that the earlier news stories about greater production for blue diodes and other things come true in a timely manner.

I'd like to see $499 for the 60 giger at Christmas.

I suspect Gary's scenario several posts up is far and away the more realistic possibility, though.

I agree with this scenario alot more than others. I don't think we will see a price cut on the PS3 this holiday season. Sony will leave the price where it is to drive home the value of the product. It will sell like hotcakes during the holiday season, both as a BD player and a video game system. There will be many new games out to capture those people who say there are no games out for the PS3.

I think the price cut will come in the spring of '08 when the gaming market is rather slow.

I agree with what you're saying about new games coming out. I read an article that said that sony needed to have a price cut by the end of this year, but some of us don't think that needs to happen. Blu-ray has done very well in the last few months. I have read reviews for pirates one and two on blu-ray and both movies are must buys. We have had quite a few firmware updates since launch day for the ps3 with more to come in the future and each new update adds something to the list.

going to have to say next year for Christmas. If the price is dropped to quick it just looks like Sony is not selling enough.
It took a while for the ps2 to to drop in price so i decided to see if i could find anything to back up my thoughts on that comment. yes its Wikipedia but its has price history from all other country's also.

I think that a bundle and a price cut are not far. Especially, in response to the new Tosh firesale.

What'll happen first, a price cut or a newer model of the ps3 being put out here in the states?

Sony should have never dropped the 20gb model. That's the one most people wanted to buy.

I hate to be correcting you, but here is the truth. I don't even know why sony made the 20 in the first place. My theory is that sony wanted everyone to save $100 because everyone thought that sony was crazy to ask $600 for a machine. Go to launch day, the 60 was way more higher in demand and beat out the 20 on a 10 to 1 ratio. When launch time came around in europe, sony didn't even bother to put the 20 out because they knew that the machine wouldn't sell. This was proven by the fact that the 20 didn't sell very well in Japan and here in the states. Sony confirmed that they were going to scrap the 20 and continue making 60's which they have done already.

If thats true then why did sony report that the 60gb was selling 9 to 1 from the 20gb. You don't just get the extra space but wifi as well and with the new update 1.8 thats a big deal. where as the 20gb did not have this ability.

No one wanted the 20 in the first place. Customer demand was on the 60 and still is. Sony should have just made the one model of the ps3 and not two, even if the lower end one was $100 cheaper.

Because that ratio was true. But it ignored that there was an extremely limited supply of 20gb models. If Sony made available equal amounts of 20gb & 60gb units, you'd see an entirely different ratio.

What is this thread about? Price cuts. The 20gb model was a price cut. It would have sold more consoles.

I wanted the 20gb, until I looked at how much more was provided with the 60gb. I got the 60.

I'll be selling my 60 to buy an 80 in a month, when they're introduced here in Korea.
