Default KDL-40W4100 is finally mine!!! Few questions

So I just got this TV today. Man it's great.

Few questions:

Why doesn't 120HZ look like 120HZ? I know it is on but am I doing something wrong?

Usually it is somewhat noticeable but I can't tell at all. I am using a PS3 for blu's.

Also, I know Avsforum is the place to go...but any members on THIS site with any good picture settings?

Avsforum is too cluttered imo and the threads are far, far too long and I feel like I'm lost in threads that begun years ago.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!!

If you're using it to watch Blu-ray movies, it's a good idea to turn the motion enhancer off. Also, make sure your Blu-ray player has the 24Hz turned on.

+1, your TV will correctly refresh at 120hz and display the movie as intended at 1080/24p only when motion enhancer is off.

How is it suppose to look? It's purpose is for motion blur reduction and 24Hz playback. Are you referring to the frame interpolation?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you meant the motion enhancer or whatever your TV manufacturer calls it. The 120 hz is always "on". If I am correct in my assumption, then the best example people use to explain what it looks like with the motion enhancer on, is it looks like a "soap opera" in terms of the quality of the video.

Yep make sure the motion enhancing crap is off and you should be golden.

Except when watching sports, then you can turn it back on. But only then.

Ok guys. Thanks for the responses.

I turned off Motion Enhancer for when I watch Blu Rays. Should I have it Off for TV viewing as well? Or leave that on Standard?

Also, I am using my PS3 as a blu ray player and when it starts up, it says it is in 1080i and not 1080p. Not a big deal but it's bugging me. My dad has a 52V4100 and when he watches blu's it shows 1080p.

How do I get mine to say 1080p?

I can't speak for the PS3, as I do not have one. But perhaps it is not set for HDMI on the PS3? I can't say for sure.....

However, as far as what to do with the motion enhancer while watching regular TV, that is really up to you, the viewer. As rlf3911 stated, for watching sports it is a really nice thing to have and does help interpolation during scenes or plays that move quickly. I think is looks good with cartoons as well. For everything else, it does make it look weird and I try not to use it or have it only on the lowest setting. But to each their own and this depends on what you like to view.

Thanks Forsberg.

I just went into my PS3 XMB and had it redetect the HDMI cable so then it picked up the 1080p and then I turned on the 24hz so now that works.

I know the 120Hz is alway on, its a refresh rate. Thats what the motion enhancement is called though. the correct general term of the "soap opera" look is Frame Interpolation. Each TV has it's own name for it though.

Cool, always glad I can help. Work is soo slow for me lately, that the time I spend on here is sometimes the most productive thing I do during the day....

My picture looks like "shady." I don't know if that makes sense.

But how do I make it so it looks vibrant without over doing the colors? Vivid makes it bright but it's not what I am looking for and I hear to stay away from Vivid.

I know you already mentioned avs forums but that site usually has pretty good baseline settings for the most accurate picture. Usually you would start by setting it to movie mode or cinema mode. Usually it may seem dim or doesn't have the punch of the Tv's you see at Bestbuy but it's the most accurate you'll get out of the box. Since I'm assuming you have no knowledge of grayscale, I suggest looking for a control that changes color tone like warm, normal, cool. Set it to what looks like the most neutral to you. From there, there's not much else you can do other than buying some calibration items.

I think its just regular TV watching on DirecTV when it looks shady.

Blu Rays stand out really well and the colors on those are very vibrant and really jump out so I'm not too worried.

I will have to look into this more.

What do I put CineMotion on? Auto 1? 2? or Off?
