Other people can correct me but a professional calibration is still the way to go if you have the bucks for it

at a bare minimum I would get a calibration disc such as the DVE.

You definitely want to adjust your TV properly as the settings from the factory are not always accurate or beneficial to your TV.

A new entry into the market has just been introduced for around $25. Go here for more information:

You do need to pick up the color filter at some point (available very cheaply on the web) to properly use these discs.

You know, I have one of those for DVD. Felt it was pretty good. Used it for BD as well. Then I looked up my model on AVS and used someone else's settings, tweaked slightly to my taste and lighting. Personally, I think that's a great, free option.

I own it. It could be much more user friendly, but once you let things sink and and screw around a bit everything falls into place. I set my TV according to the CNET and tweaktv settings and then ran the calibration tests on the DVE disc to fine-tune. Very few adjustments were necessary. Mainly just the sharpness.

If you have blue celophane you can just get the DVE disc through Netflix.

If you have any questions about the disc, we will try and answer them for you. There is a thread in another section with more details. I don't want to derail this thread since it is a DVE thread. Here is the thread currently discussign our disc. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=91801
