My PS3 is connected to STR-DA3300ES/S receiver via HDMI which is connected to a 32" LCD Sony Bravia TV via HDMI as well. When ripping CD's using the PS3 the frequency is 44.1 kHz after conversion to PCM the frequency of the signal is 48 kHz meaning the PS3 converts it before playback which is fine but the problem is the original music file is stereo and after conversion the PS3 puts it out as a multi channel signal. Either 7.1 or 5.1 in my case 5.1 as I only got 5 speakers connected. This is wrong after conversion the music file must still be in stereo. Although this file is now played back in multi channel music is only coming from the front left and right speakers the other 3 and sub is dead, which in a way is right as the original is stereo. The problem is that because the signal the amp receives is multi channel you can not play this file in surround by using for example Pro Logic mode of the amp.
The only why to fix this is to turn 7.1 and 5.1 off in the sound settings of the PS3 leaving only 2.0 on. This is not the correct way as you can not change settings each time you want to play a music file, when the PS3 converts the music file it must be left in stereo. Well after installing 2.70 my amp switches correctly to stereo when playing AAC files, if I set the music CD's to playback at 48kHz the amp switch to stereo aswell, it is only when the CD's are set for 44.1kHz when it does not switch to stereo, s this problem has basically been sorted out for me with this firmware update. No, I don't remember someone telling a story about ripping CDs. That's as far as I got. |

Here's the problem in your thinking...the original track was never 5.1...CD's only contain a digital 2.0 stereo track...CD's do not have room to carry the data for a "full" 5.1 surround...it is not your issue..it is the limitation of CD media. Which is why audiophiles love SACD..they can handle the bandwidth for full surround sound. To sum up your point...it seems 2.70 firmware is now letting the PS3 matrix the audio directly to 5.1 I am extremely intrigued by this..I will have to check it out after work. |

I know what you are exactly talking about OP. I should prob download the update, as it bugs me too to not be able to use any of the music processing modes on my Onkyo such as Neo 6 and pro logic music, while listening to music from the PS3

With the new firmware version 2.70 this problem for me at least has been fixed. CD's and AAC files no play in stereo and no more in multichannel. Last edited by frieda; 04-04-2009 at 12:40 PM. |
