I listen to -30 on my receiver. However, I would really like to have it at -20 but I can't cuz I live in an apartment.

PS: Your volume does not equal my volume. We can have the same exact receiver with the volume set at -15 but not sounding the same. The volume output/loudness depends on many parameters such as speaker placement, size, equalization,... Anyway.

For Blu-ray disks, I run between 0 to -6 dB for movies, and for concerts around -10dB or a little lower.

Not exactly if I understand current equipment correctly. With the newer AVRs, with Audyssey or other automatic setups, a "0" on the AVR's level display will equal 75 SPL (Reference Level) at the main listening position. Therefore, the difference in level (+ or -) from "0" should be about equal between different equipment/setups if they are properly set. For example, a 5dB decrease in the AVR's volume setting should equal a 5dB decrease in volume at the listening postion.

My apartment is great.......really good insulation. I have yet to hear a complaint, even when I've had it cranked up quite loudly at 1am. I do play it considerably louder during the day on my days off!

Just curious here......

I was looking at your room, and was wondering what "obstacles" it may have??? with a room that big, I would think you should be able to find a better place to set up the T.V. and couch etc... because it looks like you have the T.V. in the corner, and the speakers very close to the T.V.... I would try to stretch my soundfield a little.... especially if I was fortunate enough to have a room that big!

since i set my system to absolute and not relative (that whole numbers going down, sound going up was a real pain for me and the family) I usually watch movies at 60 - 65, for some movies, that are recorded at a higher level, I turn it down to 55. Since doing the auto speaker calibration, I can turn my volume up and it doesn't distort it because the calibration, which set my speakers up as large, dialed down the speaker levels and I get much better quality of sound at louder volumes that don't distorte the sound or hurt my ears. The highs & low's i get from my speakers are incredible. Oh yeah, I have 5 out of 7 of my speakers bi-wired too. (I'm sure I'll get grief about that!)

-15db during the day, then -20db when it's past 9pm. When I watch TV it is usually around -30 or -25db unless it's like 24 or a race of some kind then it goes up to -20db!

Thanks for the advice....well one obstacle is the lack of space...see its not a dedicated theatre room...its my bedroom so i have a queen size bed, a computer desk where all homework gets done and laptop is located and i have one lazy boy couch and then there aren't that many electrical outlets....i'm using one station for my computer, one for the home theatre and i have one next to my bed...all outlets are on separate walls...

When I was using my Onkyo 605 I would set it between 60 and 65 with very few movies going up to 70(DVD's with not so good soundtracks). I find that DTS soundtracks are much louder than Dolby so I sometimes wouldn't go beyond 55. I have now switched out my 605 for a Harman Kardon AVR-247(got a great deal on Ebay through the Harman store) and so far between -25 and -20 seem to be good volumes for me. My 605 will be going in the bedroom next week when my new Energy Act6 speakers come(another great Ebay deal), so I don't know what volumes I'll be using for those since I'm sure they will differ from my HK speakers. Since I live in an apartment and my bedroom backs up to my neighbor I probably won't play it as loud anyway...not that he cares much. He plays his music and movies pretty loud too.

Pretty much -12db for movies. Some a little more, some less.

BR concerts might see -8/6db for select songs while in the right mode

My thinking is I prefer to choose the method of my going deaf, home audio!
Beyond my home theatre I like things quiet. I always use hearing protection in loud enviroments(work etc) and tell others to do the same.
With this strategy I hope to watch and listen to my collection till I'm ancient.
If need be, I'll just turn it louder!
