Thumbs up Has your HT made you a better gamer?

I'm sure that most of you are like me and have been gaming for far longer than you've had hdtv and surround sound. Do you find that your HT has made you a better gamer?

I absolutely do. I'm a multiplayer fan..... mostly shooters, and surround sound is a HUGE advantage when game designers to a good job with it. I can't tell you how many times I've heard someone sneaking up behind me to try to slice me in the back.... only to spin around on him at the last second and blow his head off with a shotgun blast or two. After the game "how'd you always know I was there" and I'm like "dude..... I heard you a mile away." It's also great for longer distances when you get this "audial map" of exactly where the action is taking place in the game.

And when you're 40 years old and probably on the verge of needing glasses... a giant screen doesn't hurt either

Yeah i know what you mean. having a surround sound has made the gaming experience so much better. i can say that it does make me play better, COD for example. when i play with my tv speakers im good im get plenty kills, but when i use my 5.1 im 10x better. hearing more details as you said, plus the loud sound effects really puts you in the middle of it all.

My HT in my room makes me look stupid. I say this because I was extremely competitive in Halo 2 and 3, placing semi-pro at MLG(major league gaming) events, and i played on a 22" viewsonic(tv used at tournaments) with bayerdynamic DT880 headphones when 2 feet away I have a 55" SXRD w/ 7.1 surround. Friends/peeps would think i'm crazy/retarded when they walked into my room and looked at what i was playing on vs what was next to me.

It's funny you made this thread because that is definitely the case for me. I tend to do a whole lot better when the volume is cranked up. You can hear where guys are actually shooting from and the footsteps too.

Definetely has made me a better gamer. I like shooters but prefer driving games. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue is a good example with surround you can hear the wind in the background when you are speeding down the straights of Daytona. When you draft another car the wind noise drops which lets you know that you are in the draft (along with increase in speed). Another element I added to my home theater was a Buttkicker, in GT5P I can "feel" the road and the rumble strips in the corners. For shooters the Buttkicker lets you "feel" the gunfire and explosions. The aural and physical stimulation you get from today's home theater systems I feel makes the gaming experience all the better and can give you somewhat an edge.

Not only that, but i've found out that i've done better on COD4 online, for example on my surround system, i hear near by enemies and of course, judging from where the sound is coming from i know where the enemy is usually at....also when they are placing claymores etc....

Default Has your HT made you a better gamer?

As far as myself and my kids are concerned....

HT will improve on some aspects sound for example if u have 5.1 or 7.1

BUT on hardcore levels where LAG is a very large factor along with using WIRED controllers - HT is nt an advantage.

MLG *****s are always hardwired with the controllers and use still CRT monitors to avoid any lag.

Lag will make or break where ones ranking is - 2 of my 4 kids play and win on MLG(Xbox360) and if you dont want the sponsers and prizes to goto some1 else - the gear has to be stripped down to inflict major beat downs.

Absolutely not. Between watching BDs/cable TV and listening to music, I don't have enough time to play video games

Yes, it's helped me out alot. Especially in COD, you can hear the dudes walking or running and if they don't show up on the map, go kill them. It's helped a little in KZ 2, But mostly COD and Nazi Zombies. Dead Space was another !!

Surround sound yes. you can hear people sneak up behind you, grenades fly over your head... the TV going from a 27 inch LCD to a 46LCD made me a worse gamer i think =( more enjoyable but more to look at
