Hello forum: I have the Sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray player and a Yamaha Receiver (RX-V665), both having Audio capability for Dolby True HD I am trying to be sure I have my settings optimally set on the Blu-Ray player to get the best possible audio available to the receiver when watching movies. I was told that the Blu Ray player can decode the audio or it can flow through to the Receiver (via HDMI 1.3 connection) in the ‘Bit Stream’ or ‘Raw Mode’ and the receiver can decode it (thus lighting up the ‘Dolby True HD’ on the Receiver display when playing the movie).
Any advice on which decoding option is better (through the Blu Ray player or in the Receiver), or are they equal? I like to be sure (if possible) to see the light/display on the receiver, so I know it’s truly in ‘Dolby True HD’ audio playback mode. Which set-up Audio options should I choose on the S350 to have it in the ‘Bit Stream’ or ‘Raw Mode’? Thank You forum for any advice/feedback. Jr. |

The S350 doesn't decode dts-MA internally. So, if you want the lossless track, you have to bitstream it to a receiver for decoding. TrueHD can be decoded in either device and should sound the same either way.
S350 Settings HDMI Audio = Auto BD Audio = Direct That's all you need to do on the player side to set up for bitstream output. When BD Audio = Direct, the HDMI handshake determines whether the receiver has the needed decoder. If so, the player will bitstream and you'll get TrueHD and DTS Master Audio to light up on your AVR. |
