Since you got the S550, you do have the ability to go (as high as) 7.1 over your analog outputs. You could then choose which channels you want to use and then hook them up to your 5.1 Denon AVR-1604. EDIT... Oh shoot. I did not realize the receiver doesn't have analog inputs! Last edited by brettallica; 04-21-2009 at 08:55 PM. |

If you want to stay within the Denon line, I can highly recommend the 2809ci which I just got a month ago for $800 and change from 6ave.com. An excellent replacement to my AVR-1706, which did not do HDMI, and is now owned by a happy eBay'er.

I'm probably going to go with a Yamaha this time around. I absolutely hate the Denon remotes. Could also go with a Pioneer.

It's probably a good thing that you have to upgrade your AVR. While mine does have analog inputs, it does have limitations that newer HDMI AVRs do not. If I hadn't invested so much money in my AVR, I would have upgraded it too. (Analog cables are much cheaper.)
I would recommend an AVR that supports 7.1 channel audio. Even though less than 20% of movies are released in 7.1, they are breathtaking and worth the extra money. |
