This sounds like a very different role than the usual ones Brad goes for. I will definitely need to see a lot more about this before I make up my mind.
Source: Variety April 21, 2009 Demetri Martin, who stars in Ang Lee's upcoming Taking Woodstock, is joining Brad Pitt in Columbia Pictures' Moneyball. Steven Soderbergh will direct the adaptation of Michael Lewis' book about ballplayer-turned-Oakland Athletics g.m. Billy Beane (Pitt) and his attempt to field a competitive team on a slim payroll. Shooting on the drama begins in June. Variety says that former Oakland A's team members David Justice and Scott Hatteberg have signed on to play themselves in the film, while Daryl Strawberry and Lenny Dykstra are among those who will be seen on camera being interviewed about their experiences with Beane when he was a phenomenon drafted by the New York Mets before flaming out and becoming a baseball scout. Martin will play Paul De Podesta, a Harvard graduate who turned down Wall Street jobs to use his statistical skills to change baseball scouting tactics. His system, known as "Earned Run Value," allowed Beane to evaluate valuable players he could hire at low cost. |

His comedy is golden, you can catch it on Comedy Central sometimes. He was also great on The Daily Show! I have yet to see his TV show...

![]() I kid. I like dry humor like this, The Office, and Flight of the Conchords. To each their own I guess... |

I read this book last year, and it's pretty interesting, but Beane seems like a huge d-bag, who is a bit bitter that his baseball career didn't work out (he was, at one time, a top prospect, and his career fizzled pretty quickly). Whether that makes an interesting movie or not, I don't know. I kind of hope it gets nominated for some Oscars, that way it'll be easier to see. ![]() |

![]() Beane, who grew up in the San Diego, California area and attended UC San Diego, was a first-round draft choice of the New York Mets in the 1980 MLB amateur draft and played parts of six seasons as a reserve outfielder in the major leagues, with the Mets, the Minnesota Twins, the Detroit Tigers and the Athletics, from 1984 to 1989. He was on the bench for two World Series wins - with the Twins in 1987, and the Athletics in 1989. He completed his 148-game career with a .219 batting average and 3 home runs. Though Beane was a highly-touted prospect, his skills in high school did not translate to the Major Leagues. |

In any case, the guy has 2 World Series rings, despite playing an average of less than 25 games per season. There are some great players out there who never even won one. Barry Bonds and Craig Biggio are two in recent memory. Old legends like Ted Williams, Ernie Banks, and Ty Cobb (who is often considered the greatest all-around player of all-time), also never won one. |
