Default IGN Presents the History of SEGA

http://retro.ign.com/articles/974/974695p1.html

its 11 pages long so i'm not going to copy/paste it here. but its a very interesting read. learned some stuff i never knew. give it a look guys

here's the most interesting thing, cause we all knew how ninentdo screwed up their chance with sony. but i never knew sega did the same..

Quote:
Kalinske was not yet defeated. He still had plenty of connections, not the least of which was Sony. SEGA had a good relationship with them, having worked together on the SEGA CD, and SEGA had helped them to get their feet wet in the software business. Sony had been working on a deal with Nintendo that had had recently fallen through and were interested in continuing their work on a game console. Kalinske tells of the Sony deal:

"We got together with [Sony] and defined what we'd like to see in our next hardware. We had this great idea that it should be a joint SEGA-Sony hardware system. If we had to take a loss on the hardware (which was the norm then), we'd split the loss on the hardware, but we wouldn't split software, so any software they did, they'd get 100% of the profits, and any software we did, we'd get 100% of the profits. It seemed like a fair deal since we were eons ahead of them in terms of software development.

"So we go to Japan, and Sony management liked the idea. Then we went to SEGA, and Nakayama hated the idea. [laughs] So that was the end of that, and the rest is history once again. Those were the specs that became the PlayStation." -- Tom Kalinske

Yeah, um, that's swell. Later on, Sega had Microsoft design the GUI and BIOS for the Dreamcast, which was a modified version of Windows CE. It gave Microsoft just enough of a taste to try something of their own...

So basically it's SEGA's fault that the Xbox exists? Damn you SEGA!

*sniff* I miss Sega as a hardware company. Never got a chance to own a Dreamcast and play online on it. Still quite possibly the most underrated console ever.

same can be said for the wii. (read: Homebrew channel)

if my dreamcast never broke down on me, i would still play it to this day. however i have moved on from that generation of consoles in my life and am trying to stick to the now. however there were some awesome games on that system (heres looking at you project justice)

I always thought the Dreamcast was a pretty solid machine. Other than that I felt like most of Sega's hardware was just plain "cheap." Some of their stuff may have been seen as innovative at the time, but believe at lot of consumers now - after looking back on it all - felt ripped off by the Sega CD, Sega 32X, etc. And people complain about the PS3's price tag now? I remember the Sega Saturn coming out at $400.

Sega peaked with the Genesis which was absolutely awesome. Then they went down hill and more their software sucked. The DC had some good 3rd party support for arcade games (probably wasn't too hard when it was similar hardware Naomi board) but still their first party offerings were mere shadows of yesteryears.

They did have some good Gamecube games. Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2 FZero GX

Seriously what do they bring to the table now? VF5 isn't nearly as good as VF2 (pinnacle of the series)..

Thanks, I haven't played that. Is it a turn based rpg?

What else beyond the starter? Oh yeah, I had Virtua Tennis which was fun.

I guess I'm just sad as I want games like Super Thunderblad, Galaxy Force II, Super After Burner, Space Harrier, etc for this generation..

I still have my dreamcast, if you compare the dreamcast control to the original xbox control. it's pretty much identical.

Great article. I still remember getting my first Genesis for Christmas, along with Joe Montana Football and Buster Douglas Boxing. Those games were so amazing at the time, especially compared to what Nintendo had. Interesting later part of the article reliving all the disappointments Sega has had since the Genesis, although I agree with others that Dreamcast was a great system.
