Default Will you get better audio quality with a 24 bit master

I have noticed that all Warner Brothers True HD tracks are all 16 bit now would they sound better if they were 24 bit masters like every other company seems to be?

I'm not really an audiophile, but from what I'v seen in the past, WB doesn't exactly do things to the highest quality that often. While they did decide the format war, they have repeatedly released movies with no HD sound at all (Speed Racer anyone?). I would not be surprised if they are cutting corners on their HD sound releases also.

If you have spiderman 3 you can compare for yourself to see. It has a PCM track that is 16 bit and a TrueHD track that is 24 bit.

Scientifically speaking:
  • A higher sampling rate (e.g., 96kHz or approximately 96,000 samples per second) allows for higher frequencies to be represented.
  • A higher bit number allows a more accurate representation of the amplitude of the audio signal, resulting in better dynamic range.
Can you hear the difference? I leave that up to you. I don't get involved in subjective matters.

just out of curiousity, what is your take on the Spidey 3 audio?...meaning which do you prefer? We could also talk about "300".

I like seeing the Uncompressed 5.1 Display on my Receiver so I always gravitate toward the PCMs vs True HD and what not.

If you use the bitstream option, you can see the codec's name on the display.

Solution: Get the new Oppo BDP-83.

I posted something like this few months ago. Even a thread on it I believe. My point was that I was seeing mostly 24bit audio (coming from universal mostly) and saw the 16 bit from wb...and I immediately thought WB might be skimping out on audio again. Truth be told that isn't the case as a lot of blu-rays are in 16 bit. Some 16 bit sounds better than 24 bit and might not necessarily be better if it was in 24 bit.

BD, I bitstream when I watch Bluray movies. BTW, I have the Sony BDP 350, PS3, Denon 1800BD, and LG BH200, so I'll just tell the wife I'll get the Oppo BDP-83 just for the heck of it(although if I could at this time I wouldn't even hesitate) So we'll have one BDP for every room and bathroom.

I guess I'm not the only one who prefers the PCM mix then either! Tried this with 300 the other day, and just could not settle on anything other than the PCM. Before anyone says, "it's just louder!!!", that was not the point, even after adjusting the volume, the soundstage just wasn't there like the PCM. So what I'm saying is that even though something says 24bit, I don't fully trust it to be better till I hear it. I posted this somewhere else, but the Sara Bareilles Live at the Filmore 24/96khz audio is very disappointing.
