Default Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB

Any had any experience or insight into this new drive? After their firmware problems with other drives, I am wary of buying Seagate again. Any other good 500GB per platter 1TB+ drives you'd recommend?

Even with their firmware problems, I remain Seagate loyal due to their 5 year warrantee.

All their new consumer drives are now 3 years.

An internet rumor says that their new firmware had potential but being new had bugs. These newer drives also use the newer style firmware but supposedly they've ironed out the bugs ... though the rumor I read says the bugs will be ironed out more in the next generation.

I think I'll wait on the 1TB+ 2nd generation Samsung Spinpoints ... right now they come in just the .5TB variety but some websites already list the 1TB version. Should come in the next month or so I guess.

If it's a Samsung, does that mean the drive components are made in Korea instead of China like it is for Seagate and everyone else?

btw guys, in the coming summer months, would that be a bad time to buy hard drives since they may be under extreme heat during shipping? They don't air condition those carrier trucks AFAIK... I assume B&M hard drives are transported in air conditioned trucks?

The driver cab may be air conditioned, but the trailer isn't. I've unloaded my share while working at DELL, Circuit City and CompUSA.

Since drives get shipped in the summer but may stay on shelves indefinitely, maybe that explains why a lot of drives fail! They should not ship drives during hot weather.

I have a external seagate 500gb Free Agent pro and I gotta say, I am very unhappy with it. At first I thought it was my pc, the Hdd kept disconecting, not turning off, and I thought, okay I have a emachine its that and not the Seagate. I alos tried differnt usbs and even esata but still the same. But my bro has a new Dell laptop-Intel core 2 duo, and he bought the newer version of the Seagates and he had the same thing! I bought my Mom a cheap brand-Simpledrive, and that works great!!! no problems! My bro brought his Seagate back and got the latest Simpedrive and has no trouble! the name fits, Simpledrives are just simple! Im never ganna get Seagates again but thats me, maybe you guys have better luck with them.

The company I work for has had numerous Seagate failures. Their 1TB drives are junk. Their customer service is poor. They've been dropped from our supplier list and will easily miss out on at least 5 figures worth of future business. Seagate isn't the company it used to be.
