Default ps3 and folders (and a note on streaming)

hey guys,
so i have my ps3 up and running and am easily able to stream from winamp to the ps3. i use the remote play (based on orb) and it seems to be working great. so there other options than WiMP (note: haven't tried WiMP)

currently, my music library is set up something like c:\my music\artist\album\

if the song i have is by itself, it would just be c:\my music\artist\

basically, what i'd like one of two (both if possible). first, i wasn't able to do it, but can the ps3 read m3u playlists? if not, is there a playlist format it can read? second, can the ps3 parse through my entire collection and randomly shuffle through it?

pretty basic i guess, but my knowledge does not revolve around some of the finer points of ps3 usage.

thanks

I dont think it could read playlist or shuffle through your library.

You do know about the 1.8 update right. You dont need to connect to your pc using remote play anymore.

I just recently started messing around with this, but here are some things I've discovered:

1. There is no way to port a file structure over to the PS3 from your PC. Also (and I'd like some confirmation of this but), the PS3 seems to have trouble reading all of the mp3s in a folder if there are a lot of tracks. I've tried this with different folders and different discs. If there are more than around 50 tracks in a folder, it will just drop the rest of them like they're not there. Strange. My best luck has actally been with my iPod as this only seems to be a problem with CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs.

2. The best way to tag your mp3s to go along with the PS3's file structure is to just make sure you have things you want grouped together tagged under the same album. For example, I had a bunch of Smallville music, and I had the album as the episode name for each song. I had to change that because I ended up with a folder for each episode. I ended up naming the album the season number and just putting the episode info in the comment portion of the tag. That grouped the songs by season. It's just a matter of feeling out the PS3's file structure.

3. There seems to be no way to sort things in SUB-folders. For example, you cannot have songs under a U2 folder and then have folders for each album. It's annoying to be honest, because you end up with a bunch of folders out on your main screen that look like this:

U2 - The Joshua Tree
U2 - The Unforgettable Fire
U2 - Zooropa

...rather than just being able to put it all under the artist. Now, you can sort the files by artist, but you'll be sorting ALL your files by artist, so it's not really much of a shortcut. lol I know it sounds complicated and it kind of is at first. But now that I've gotten used to it, I LOVE it. You just have to adhere to the PS3's picky nature.

BTW: it took me forever to figure this out, but to get the songs from your iPod to your PS3, just put what you want AND ONLY WHAT YOU WANT to add to the PS3 on your iPod in iTunes, hook it up via the USB port in the front, press triangle when the iPod shows up as a device on the menu, click on show all info, go to the iPod control folder, then music, then (when you see all the file folders), copy multiple, select all, ok. Boom. Everything that's on the iPod is transfered.

Is this file organization still a pain like this with the new firmware updates? I finally got a new 160GB USB HDD, but can't seem to do subfolders still!

MUSIC/FOO FIGHTERS
works if the files are in the FF folder, but my PC is:
MUSIC/FOO FIGHTERS/ECHOS
which doesn't find the files.

Very annoying.

Ok, playlists that are m3u work. At least on my machine, streaming straight from the computer using WMP11. It can read subfolders and everything. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO GET SUBFOLDERS.

Yeah, I have been successful with the streaming. I was just saving all my MP3s to one portable HDD so I can clear off my laptop HDD space a little, and figured I'd make it PS3 friendly if possible. Guess that still is not real possible if I want to keep them organized.

You can make subfolder from you computer, then when you plug into the PS3, it will recognize them, PS3 doesnt let you do subfolders for some odd reason, so I just fix on the Computer (plus its faster.)

The PS3's file organization is a joke, and is my biggest knock on it. I bought a 25ogb hard drive with the intention of putting my 160gb's of MP3's on it, but soon realized that because of the PS3's inability to have subfolders basically made it impossible to navigate through them. I keep hoping that a firmware update will fix it, so I dont always have to have my computer on in order to listen to my mp3's.

or TVersity. To say that I hate WMP11 is a gross understatement.

To the OP, I have my PC file structure the same as you, only I've got one extra level of heirarchy, and I've split all my artists up into alphabetical folders... if you go the streaming route, it's very easy to maintain a well-organized file structure.

Maybe sony didn't have the foresight to see that people would upgrade the hard drives in their PS3s and load 40+GB of music on it, and that's why the XMB handles resident MP3s so poorly. Either way, this needs to be fixed, because the quality of streamed music is ass.

my streamed music plays wonderfully, i also have the original songs, and not something off of limewire though. and WMP11 is easy you to library, right click, click media sharing, click my media, click the unknown device and apply BOOM, your done, streaming, and have all subfolders you need/want, i also have it set up with ABC order, and then different albums underneath that, and it works fine..

I get playlists and subfolders using Twonkyvision...i'm streaming it from my NAS drive, so there isn't even a need for the PC to be on.
