Just recieved my copy today. It is Region Free despite saying "A" on the back. Has proper English Subs (it is not like 20th Century Boys w/ English&Chinese at the same time). It appears to be in 1:78:1 AR (there are no black bars). Japanese DTS-HD MA 5.1 Track that is very nice. Comes with a DVD that contains 3 extras. No English subs on the DVD, just Chinese subs.
Has a slipcover.

I watched a little over half of the movie. The English subtitles are fine, and I assume this release uses the same subtitle script as the U.S. release.

My initial impression: The 3-D scenes with the planes look great, but the character designs are very plain, and the story is dull. The score by Kenji Kawai is very good.

The opening minutes of the film (watching it right now and I have it paused, rewinding back and forth checking the audio and detail on those planes) sounds absolutely awesome and nice use of directing audio all around you. Pretty nice utilization of rear surround.

Hehe... I have to watch it again. I fell asleep after the first half hour....but I'll chalk it up to being tired

UPDATE:

I finished watching it and the special features and it's really awesome that Oshii went to Skywalker Ranch and had them do the audio. He really wanted the audio to be a big part of the film and I was really impressed with the audio quality for the film. 3D scenes and detailed backgrounds were just incredible but the character designs were a bit interesting since everything is so detailed but the characters were not.

The special features were worth watching because you don't really get to see Oshii in a personal light, nor the Production I.G. team, so the three special features were definitely enjoyable.

Oh, and watch the film after the ending credits. I'm guessing many people didn't and Oshii had to mention that in the special features..hehe..

hey,

can anyone possessing the HK BD of "Sky Crawlers" tell me the average bitrate for video & master track? That means do a quick BDInfo-Check?

I do already have the US BD, but here the bitrate is a little low; that is why I thougt about getting the HK if there are better values to be found...

I know this is not the usual "is there anything new" post, but if anyone has a few min, that would be great.

Can anyone tell me if the HK BD is a BD 25 or 50?

BD25. Reason I can't post a true disc scan is because I don't have "that" certain program on my PC. I doubt the PQ is any different from Sony's.

Thanks for the information, if it is a BD25 then the PQ is definitelly worse than the JP BD, as the video on this is 36 GB...

So maybe the upcoming UK BD gives the feature higher bitrate...

Manga UK will probably use a BD25 like they usually do. Also, I seriously doubt the Japanese PQ is significantly better given it takes up more room. My HK version is darn good with has no real problems I have seen. Only thing the Japanese version has over the others really is 2 6.1 tracks.
