Default Theory on Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Found this and it's a very interesting take on the movie:

From here.

Quote:
My favorite thought-piece about Ferris Bueller is the "Fight Club" theory, in which Ferris Bueller, the person, is just a figment of Cameron's imagination, like Tyler Durden, and Sloane is the girl Cameron secretly loves.

One day while he's lying sick in bed, Cameron lets "Ferris" steal his father's car and take the day off, and as Cameron wanders around the city, all of his interactions with Ferris and Sloane, and all the impossible hijinks, are all just played out in his head. This is part of the reason why the "three" characters can see so much of Chicago in less than one day -- Cameron is alone, just imagining it all.

It isn't until he destroys the front of the car in a fugue state does he finally get a grip and decide to confront his father, after which he imagines a final, impossible escape for Ferris and a storybook happy ending for Sloane ("He's gonna marry me!"), the girl that Cameron knows he can never have.

It's not comparing it to Fight Club it uses the movie as an example of what is going on in his head. I think it's an interesting take on the film.

well, since you put it that way...i guess. i took it as this IS what the movie is about the first time read it.

i still think the guy was smoking pineapple express to come up with that.

The movie itself and the character of Ferris Bueller seemed intentionally unreal. Like they're wasn't an attempt to ground it in reality.

The guy's explanation is plausible IMO.

so are you saying that every movie has to be grounded to reality?

it was just suppose to be a fun and silly movie, an exaggeration on teen and highschool life.

I meant the movie is considerably more dream-like than most.

I have a feeling you don't like people analyzing movies.

Yes, and an exaggeration on what high school kids do when they skip school for the day.

lol, somewhat of a good read!

it's not that i don't like it. it just fascinates me people come up with the stuff they do. and how some people always have to find the worst in movies. i'm the type i just take it for what it is. it is VERY rare that i complain about a movie.

edit: i'm not saying analyizng is complaining, i'm just expanding on the subject at hand.

I can be critical of movies sometimes. I try not to complain too much and be a positive person.

To me things like this are harmless fun.

The movie is not that deep. Its a John Hughes film, just like Home Alone and the rest of them. It is very light-hearted, and it sounds like somebody is trying to twist it in to The Matrix.

Even though I like that movie, I also kind of hate it, because it gave me false expectations of how fun high school could be.

After the first day of high school, some of my friends came over to my house, and I remember one saying "this is nothing like Saved by the Bell". I kind of thought it'd be normal to hang out around lockers, and have stereotypically defined types of students, just like in the Breakfast Club, but it wasn't there.

And then I remember the first time I skipped school. It was junior year, and it was a couple months before I got my driver's license, so I had no car. A few friends and I decided to leave after the first period was over (I forget now, but I think we had 6 periods). So here we were at about 9am, ready to call it a day, and instead of having anything fun planned, we spent over an hour just walking to my house, and then played NCAA football on PS2 for the rest of the day. Real exciting stuff.

One of the more memorable days of skipping was soon after I got my license, we skipped school and drove about 20 minutes up north to some fancy indoor-driving range, which we'd heard about and wanted to try out. The thing was a piece of crap (you could hit the ceiling with a pitching wedge, and you could hit the far wall with an 8 iron or so), but on the drive back, we decided to see how fast my car could go (it was an 88 Honda Accord). A guy in the lane next to us kind of smiled, and decided to keep up with us. When all was said and done, the two of us were driving side by side at about 110mph. The speedometer was just under 115, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't accurate (I noticed later on that it was about 3 miles faster than what I was really doing). Then the guy that was driving next to me had to exit the highway, so he gave a quick honk, and waved, and we waved back and had a laugh at how ridiculous what we'd just been doing was.

Another time during senior year, I purchased a 300zx, and decided to take it to the local boulevard early one morning, instead of going to school. So here I was with one friend in the car, and at every red light, I'd rev the engine, and look over at the car next to me. Then do the sort of thing where I point to my eyes, and then to the person in the other car, then point straight ahead down the road, to try to give the impression we were going to race.

I out-raced so many middle-aged women who were on their way to work that day. Surprisingly, as retarded as my driving was, I never really got in trouble for it. I've gotten 3 speeding tickets in my life and I felt I deserved none of them (2 were for going 5mph over the speed limit, the 3rd was the day after one of the other two, and I know I wasn't speeding... since I was driving down the same exact road again). The times I thought I easily deserved tickets (like driving 110mph), I was never caught.

i think the article wasnt meant to be a comparison between bueller and fight club, but more of an alternate angle to look at it.

not a bad take on it, yes, plausible, but at least he had some great imagination in regards to taking on a classic.

great read.

It happens to every generation--
Oh, just wait till all those tweenies get their Disney Channel/HSM dreams shattered...
(Which is about as close to "Saved By the Bell" as you can get.)
