I was entertained because I knew it was a movie.

By the way, this thread needs to be moved to the appropriate place...probably the Movie and TV Discussion forum?

That's like asking if watching Monthy Python makes me funner! It's only a movie and if you live in reality it shouldn't make you more or less of any emotion (violent, funny, etc). Perhaps it will give you cause to think, but that's about it.

the first time I saw Taxi Driver I didn't feel angry or feel the need to do something violent, I just felt bored.

"You talking to me? I don't see anyone else here, so you must be talking to me."

I felt entertained and disturbed, but have yet to go on a pimp killing spree.

i wouldn't say i felt disturbed, but it definitely isn't a movie you watch if you expect a fairytale ending. it's a realistic, dark and morally depressing film.

well, at least from the classical greek point of view
the drama (a movie/play) lets us follow the action of someone else
the audience gets to experience whatever the characters go through

so then at the climax of the action there is a catharsis, meaning that the audience reaches the pinnacle of emotion (anger, sadness, pity, hope or whatever) and it results in a cleansing or revitalizing

a violent movie lets people get any violent thoughts or feeling out of them by following the character act them out

in a way, it lets us (the audience) become less violent because the movie is an outlet for violence

so to answer your question, it does both

Taxi Driver made me feel reminiscent of every kid I ever knew who had a personality disorder and was foolish enough to expect things to go exactly the way they planned them only to find out the harsh and bitter truth about the world and take considerable exception to it all.

Heh.

Honestly, it reminded me of myself as a kid, and yes, of other people I knew and/or know like that. The direction style was simply awesome, I really loved it. One of my favorite films of all time just based on how it was made.

I didn't feel like being violent, I felt sad and disappointed at the turmoil and responsive actions of the main character.

Might as well ask the same question of The Godfather movies, or Terminator, or something like that. I'd give a similar response for all.
