Talking BDP-S1 firmware version 2.0 is here!

This version gives us DD+ and Dolby-TrueHD decoding and improved BD-J support.

Pioneer owners just got theirs and are reporting some amazing speed-ups in disc loading and other functions.

Let's hope for the best. I will report back after I download and run my update today!

Here ya go:

Downloaded it this morning, and I'll tell ya it sped up the loading times for both POTC movies and you can now skip past the trailers at the beginning of the disc.

Did you find this one downloaded from the site a bit differently? I had to 'unzip' it this time instead of just extracting it...

Has anyone tried a Dolby TrueHD track? It still says it's just regular Dolby Digital...

Same unzip need here - and I'm on a Mac. All I had to do before wass burn the disk image to a dvd with Disk Utility. Tis time I had to use Crossover and unzip it. Hope this does not happen again - my trial is about to expire. Anyway, seems to work great and does load quicker.

I installed v2.0 on my player. I popped in the POT 2 and this time, instead of a black screen you have a loading bar with the word loading above it. This is great, knowing that the player is actually doing something this time but I could not just skip the previews and go directly to the menu. I was able this time to use the chapter skip instead of the fast forward. It was a lot faster with the fast forward. I was not watching to see if the player loaded faster or not but when I go back to my theater room tonight, I will let you guys know if there is a difference in loading speed.

I noticed the same things that you did: chapter skip works with the Pirates movies and more information is displayed onscreen as the movies load. I also noticed that the movies load about 1/3 faster than with the 1.6 firmware. The biggest improvement with my player is it does not lock up after watching the pirates movies.

Currently Sony has removed the download link from their website.

"This update is temporarily unavailable. Please check back after Monday, June 11, 2007."

I hope this is not an indication that something is wrong with the 2.0 build (well it's too late for me at this point).

Thumbs up My thoughts so far

Although we may have jumped the gun (since Sony pulled the download) I don't think any of us have hurt our players. We can just run the update again when they post the final version.

Here are my observations:
  1. Load time for BD-J titles (like POTC-COTBP) is dramatically faster. On this film, time from tray close to start of previews went from ~2:40 to ~1:30
  2. You can now do CHAPTER SKIP through trailers and the pirating message
  3. CHAPTER SKIP seems to respond faster (yay!)
  4. Response of BD-J type menus is now close to that of the PS3. For exmaple in The Descent, now you get instant response of the "flashlight" highlight in the main menu. Before, it was sluggish as hell and made you want to hurry up to make your choice and get out of there.
  5. On League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the BD-J menu now reacts even faster than it did with the 1.60 update

I haven't tested True-HD yet, but if it is as good as LPCM I think we've really got a winner here.

Yep. I'm using dig coax (audioquest VDM-3) not HDMI directly to my reciever. To digress a second, v2.0 loaded fine and it does speed up things a more and the fact that you can chapter advance through the opening trailers is great, I was just scanning through anyway. The BD-J menu's finally work great and much faster, now it's great to be able to switch from DD5.1 to uncompressed on the fly. With that said, I notice a difference in sound when switching; DD5.1 was louder and sounded a bit more discreet (seperated) to each channel where uncompressed sound smoother, fuller (more blended from each channel) and just encompassed the room with sound while maintaining directionality...it was very nice...I did have to increase the volume however.

Bad news guy, you can't use Dolby Digital-Plus or Dolby TrueHD over coax... You get the same 640kbps Dolby Digital track from both... You need to either use your analog output or the HDMI output from the player.

Can we find out if this is exactly the same as before so we know whether to install again or not?

I just installed it again just to be safe. I don't think anything changed because it installed really fast, but I figure better to be safe than sorry.

Probably just a server problem that knocked out the link for a while.
