Default Cables

New location for my TT is causing me to get a phono stage and around a 10-13ft pair of interconnects.

I usually buy most of my stuff from Monoprice, but I'm skeptical that their high end $8 rca cables will be good enough. Who knows, maybe they are and I can save some $$$. Please someone chime in!

Can I get a set of really slick cables for say....$50? Or what should I be looking at? I just can't imagine spending any more for them. Considering my setup isn't *high end* and I'm not well off. Turntable is a Pro-Ject Debut III and most likely a Cambridge 640p phono stage.

First things first: you do not want that long cable between your turntable and phono stage. Between your phonostage and preamp should be OK, provided it has sufficient shielding (if RFI is a problem in your area).

You're correct in thinking that you don't want to over spend on cables--good cables are important, but they have to be in keeping with the rest of your system. That said, I think $50 for 4m interconnect might be a too low for a good quality cable ($50 would be OK for the usual 1m to 2m lengths).

I don't have any recent experience, but Kimber Kable and Audioquest make a wide range of cables that might suit your needs. Nordost is my usual go to cable company, but their stuff is a bit pricey, and isn't shielded until you get quite high up the range.

Good luck!

Good luck!
Shielded Nordost cabling starts at the Heimdall level and its not cheap. BTW, Ditto on kimber and Audioquest Rich!

Also consider Transparent Cable and Ultralink.

Since were on the subject of cables I need better cables to run from my table to the phono stage and I was considering the DOUBLE SHIELDED VPI TONEARM CABLE. The 1 meter cables are $200. Any thoughts?

Ah yes, this cable will going from the phono stage to the receiver. I'll be pulgging the turntable directly into the PS.

Thanks for the suggestions guy. I'm checking those sites above out today. Also noticed that Vanns had some decent prices on Audioquest cables.

For the price and quality of cable and connectors used it would be hard to find better than what Blue Jeans Cable has to offer. Read some of the articles on the website to help you make an informed decision.

Another alternative would be Signal Cable. Again great quality cables at an extremely affordable price.

Finally........... look into the new and used cable market at Audiogon. I have picked up quite a few big $$$ cables there. All new and I paid a fraction of the retail cost.

Try to keep your cable length as short as possible and I think in your case do look into cables that are well shielded to help prevent any interference of the analog signal. When it comes to analog cables run away from Monoprice. Yeah they may be cheap as hell but good quality (analog) cable and connectors are important for analog signals. This is not a slight against Monoprice, my opinion is based on the fact that I have cut apart quite a few of their cables and it is what it is. Monoprice does offer exceptionally "great service" no doubt, however in this case you don't want a cable that uses the cheapest made parts as possible.

Again, Nordost would be my first choice. They have a range of dedicated phono cables, Heimdall being the most affordable (not sure how much it is though).

Gotta be better than the Monoprice ones I have.
