Default 300: the Complete Experience 7/21

From Digital Bits:

(In regards to some Watchmen related DVDs/BD) Speaking of Watchmen, word is that when Warner releases the DVD and Blu-ray versions of the film later in 2009, they'll also release a more elaborate and updated Blu-ray version of 300, presumably with those new interactive special features that director Zack Snyder said he was planning back at Comic-Con 2007.

I would assume the new edition will port the PiP feature length non-FX version of the film as the HD-DVD edition did.

I wonder if they are going to address all the complaints about the grainy picture on the 300 re-issue. I have always defended the 300 BD (i think it looks great), but I will be interest to see how a cleaner version compares if they take that route...

I am not going to upgrade I didn't like it that much and Warner dumped the supirior PCM track. I don't need to spend it on something that was perfectly good to begin with, I'll use that money to buy more Blu Rays

I think the picture is supposed to be grainy. I may be wrong but I believe that this is Frank Miller was going for. I do love this movie might be my first double dip, perhaps followed by Kill Bill.

The grain is supposed to be in there and I imagine it will be in a new version as well. Just because I know that is intended, it doesn't mean that I have to like it. I think the biggest problem that I (and I assume some others have) with the BD grain is that the grain is SOOOO much more pronounced on BD than it ever was in the theater or on the DVD. So when I popped the BD in and was expecting a beautiful picture, it was a little shocking to see the intended grain instead.

I'm not sure if I will double-dip on this. I will have to wait and see what's being added to it.

when grain turns into a noisy digital mess on blu I can't stand it...but I think 300's grain is pretty pleasing and film like. But I wouldn't be suprised if warner cleaned it up considering the current blu is so heavily critizised

I'm certain that it was a collaborative decision between the two in order to maintain a "graphic novel" visual element. And, in the first 5 minutes (or so) of the commentary, Zack Snyder clearly states that the grain is completely intentional and was emphasized on purpose for this exact reason.

I thought the reason for the grain was because it was a "mystical/magical tale" or something like that.

Nope... much in the same way Frank Miller wanted 'Sin City' to maintain its graphic novel quality by being all black and white with hints of colour, he wanted '300' to maintain a graphic novel quality as well. Otherwise, Frank Miller would not have given them the rights to his work. Apparently, he is very anal about his art. I'm guessing that the grain is how they compromised.

For those of you who have the Canadian "Sin City" (and I'm not talking about Vancouver).... is there a grain on that film as well? I've read some reviews in which people have said the picture is beautiful throughout the film.

The movie was just as grainy in the theater as it is the BD. I doubt this new disc will be a new encode. The current BD is outstanding.

That Japanese release looks like a re-hash of the "300 dvd limited edition set" they released a few months ago in the U.S., with the only change being they added a blu-ray disc for the movie.

As for the U.S. release, I hope they don't tweak the picture. It looks great.

I haven't bought the current BD release of 300 so I'll probably just wait until the new release. Sin City CA looks great.
