I found one or two threads on this but thought i'd add a poll to try get an overview of how people feel...

I rarely watch special features and never take them into account when deciding whether or not to purchase.

It depends on the movie and the special features offered. Too often with new movies there is something called "documentary" in which everybody is excited, thrilled and full of praise for the whole team.
This is more of an ad than anything else and also not very interesting.

Also after the 20th time it gets boring when some FX guy explains how that special effect was created at the PC.

On the other hand there are very good Docus available (Hitchcock DVDs come to mind and also the 007 ones).
These Documentarys I'd like to watch multiple times as they are very informative. Mostly such good features are included with older and/or classic films.

When it comes to Blu-rays I always hope that at least the already available special features are included; if they offer new ones I'm okay with it.
However it doesn't influence whether I buy a movie or not.

I will always watch the special features, but only when I am bored and if there is nothing new to watch. I will watch them after a film if the film is a personal favorite. Never in my life have I listened to, or subtitled a movies commentary.

Nope, I buy because of the film itself. If it has features, ok. If it doesn't, ok. Price determines what and when I buy most things to be honest.

It always depends on what the special features are...

-if there's a version of a movie i'm going to buy where 1 has no special features, and the other has deleted scenes or a good commentary track... i'm buying the one with special features

-if there's a version of a movie i'm going to buy where 1 has no special features, and the other has a digital only as the special features... i'm buying just the movie version
___________

-if i'm going to !buy! the movie in the first place, it means i really really really liked it. So, naturally, I believe that extra/bonus/supplemental features complete the experience of the movie. If it was only a "good" movie, or "ok" movie, i'm not going to buy it at all, i'll rent it if i wanna watch it.

I really only care about deleted scenes, commentary tracks, "making of" documentaries (lord of the rings extended editions, the matrix trilogy, star wars saga, Pirates of the Caribbean to name some of the best).

I will personally get the movie regardsles of the special features. However I lok to see if it has them. I'm really excited when I see that a movie has special features. Persoanlly I love it when they have a gag reel, or a bloopers section. Just helps me remind me the they are indeed human, who have a job like the rest of us.

It really depends on the title...because sometimes I don't care at all if there are special features or not, but sometimes they are nice.

I like the fact tracks, like on Evil Dead II. I was initially excited about PiP commentary, but I have not watched ANY of them yet.

I guess with newer releases is doesn't matter to me, I think the more campy, the more "cult" classic the movie, the more I want special features, but I could care less about them on newer big budget films most of the time.

I answered 'Yes, I will only buy if there are some interesting special features. ' but my answer is more of an other depending on how you look at it.

on 80% or more of titles I don't really pay attention to what special features are available and the special features don't play any role in my purchase decision to a degree. That being said, even on titles I may never get around to watching special features on, I think I'm less likely to pay full price or a premium price for blu-ray if it has zero special features like some of the early Blus

For the remaining 20% of titles, I'm looking for a few key special features in order for me to purchase:

- extended/directors cuts where applicable - If I know there's one and it's not on the disc, I'll likely wait for a double dip
- deleted scenes/alternate endings - same as above
- Commentary (only on favorite movies)
- making of documentaries (mainly only on special effects heavy movies)

Some examples of special features affecting my buying:

Stargate - I only like the theatrical edition, so I won't buy the current Blu (sort of a reverse special features issue there)

Fantastic 4, Punisher, original T2 release, upcoming LOTR, Die Hard 4, Independance Day - no extended edition so I won't buy

Quamtum of Solace - missing special features that were talked about by director prior to release (like an alternate ending)

X-men Trilogy - Imported UK version for Bonus View

Extras are awesome. I love going into the production. So the more the merrier.

I have passed on upgrading several DVDs to Blu-Ray due to missing extras that were available on DVD.

Just glad that we finally got the full special edition for X3 here in the US with the Blu-Ray.

For the most part yes. I like to see how things are done. So as long as there are sufficient extras, like the same amount on the DVD, then I'll buy the blu (for that reason, I am still waiting on a re-release of Kingdom of Heaven with extras). And, if there's a documentary, I definitely want some bonus material too.

the main factor for me personally is the quality of the movie (in other words a movie that i liked enough to own)...another big one is the quality of the blu-ray, i love it when studios put a great deal of effort into bringing us top notch pq/aq...the only special features i've watced are the apendices for the extended lotr trilogy

I'm not in Europe so I hope I'm not hijacking, but...

I chose "Other" because special features DO matter to me, I just didn't like the available choices. I on occasion buy a bare-bones release if I love the movie. But if have a choice between a version with extras, and a version without, I certainly go with the extras.

It will depend on the movie. Certain movies I want special features, want to see how the movie was made, I will love watching the documentaries....

On others I won't even bother watching and it won't truly matters if there is no special features.

Example, I will want special features of a movie like Iron Man but for Pretty Woman I won't care one bit if there is special features or not, I will never bother watching them in any case.

Extra features have no influence at all in determining if I purchase a Blu-ray or not. I buy Blu-rays for the film on the disc, not for the extra features.
