Are you planning a 5.1 or 7.1 system?
Do you want the receiver to decode the HD audio?
How many HDMI ports do you want?
Do you want to be able to use an amp in the future?

Welcome zodiak,
Whew, your question is not easy to answer. Or, rather it is easy but we all have favorites and there are subtle or not so subtle sonic differences between many receiver brands.
Arguably the top three brands discussed on this forum are...in no particular order...
Denon, Yamaha and probably Onkyo. But you can add Pioneer and Marantz to the mix.
All of them offer either a brand new model in the range you mention or you should be able to take advantage of good deals on last years model...in some cases, Yamaha specifically, there are some concerns that the latest models may be a bit lacking in the amplification/power dept., mainly based on the weight of the new models compared to last years but there are not many, if any, hard core reviews yet.

I suggest you start reading the forum...perhaps you already have...then start auditioning receivers at local shops to reduce choices and focus on what sounds great to you and stays within your budget.

Good luck and keep us informed.

For the $600 range I would prolly say that the Denon 1909 would be one of the best places to start or the Yamaha 765. Or see if you can dig up an Onkyo 706 in that price.

onkyo 706 sounds fine to me,for the features it has,but remember,it does tend to heat up & get warm some...its a normal thing but some people are picky about it,I'm fine with it & sounds pretty good for a 7.1,hd sound receiver...

it's also able to upconvert video, matrix 5.1 sources into 7.1..ect..

i'm just glad a hand full of members here in the start were able to tell me about Onkyo receiver & Polk..well i was always a fan of polk to their high end automotive speakers since i own them also.
