United Kingdom Mario Bava's WHIP AND THE BODY

Being released on 8/25 by Odeon. One of my Top 5 Bava films.

A surprise that this isn't coming from Arrow, but Arrow had said there were rights issues in the UK with this movie, but glad to know it's been resolved.

Hopefully Odeon's disc looks better than the Kino Blu-ray, and with extras.

Does anyone have this yet? The Odeon site lists this as in stock. Amazon lists it as coming Nov 3. They just added a cover pic, misspelling Bava's name as Brava. The Odeon site shows a fixed version.

I would be interested in knowing how this compares to the US Kino BD, which was found to be too dark by some.

Odeon are certainly aware of the issues with the HD master - I'm still hoping they're doing something about it.

I do love spelling mistakes on BD covers! This had the epic-potential to be a Film by Mario Brava, starring Christopher Lee and The Dalai Lama ...

Not necessarily dark, but absolutely the wrong colors.

It's in HMV if your store has stock for £10.99

My store was never allocated a copy on BD only DVD and they never fulfilled my order. Have given up and used the deposit against my purchase of the POA Steelbook.

I had ordered instore at HMV for £10.99 as my store was never allocated stock but they never got me a copy so got my deposit deducted from the POA steelbook. The guy in my store who deals with stock control and ordering said he checked with head office and Odeon are a nightmare to try and get stock from, especially back orders. They will send a batch for release day but then that's it, they are not interested in supplying a few more at a time to HMV or elsewhere.

Hopefully Zavvi get a lot of orders so it makes it worthwhile for Odeon to fulfill the request.

Quickly threw in Whip. Firstly, it's Region Free. Transfer-wise, the encoding looks good and it's definitely been regraded (a title screen comes up as so by Pinewood) but it still suffers from some of the inherent problems that the Kino did which must be in the master and irretrievable. Definitely doesn't look anywhere near as dark as the Kino grabs I've seen and there is some shadow detail but it's still a little too dark I think. Overly bluish as well. The last DVD I owned was the E-M-S one which had a much richer and warmer palette. Without actually owning the Kino I'd be hesitant to damn it and say this is the better transfer definitively but it's highly likely.

Now, with a booklet, new Commentary from Tim Lucas, generous 1/2 hour or so overview with Jonathan Rigby, three trailers in it's three Languages and an image gallery I'm sure it wipes the floor with the Kino on the extras front. There's also a conversation with Christopher Lee but I'm pretty sure it's the exact same one that was on Curse of the Crimson Altar.

If you can handle the grading, I'd say until a new master ever comes along, this is probably the one to get.

My copy shipped from Zavvi. On top of that they had an offer where you get 10 GBP off a future purchase when you use Mastercard Masterpass, and I just got my 10 GBP code email. I wasn't sure if it had went through as there was no sort of confirmation of me using Masterpass on the final checkout page, but I guess it did

Was a bit surprised to find there's no subtitles available at all. The film has been shot in English without live sound for the most part and then post-dubbed, but it would have been nice to see the Italian and French variants with subs. Guess I'll keep the German EMS DVD edition for the Italian track with optional German subs plus the VCI DVD for some minor extras, but I don't think I will get the US Kino Blu just for subbing the French and Italian sound tracks (might be dubtitles anyway).
