Default Animated Movies: CGI Vs. Hand drawn/cartoon

I know CGI involves hand drawing too, but i was just referring to the movies look. Which style do you like more, CGI(Shrek, Wall-E, Finding Nemo) or the classic cartoon hand drawn movies(The Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid)?

I Love the CGI movies, but i do really like the hand drawn style more. can't wait for The Lion King on blu!

VS.

I'm offended that you only mention recent Disney hand drawn movies (The Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid). How about the ones Walt personally touched like The Jungle Book, Peter Pan and Pinocchio. IMO far superior in every way.

Poor comparison pics. The Aladdin picture isn't even from the movie.

Try this instead:

VS.

Okay, I'm obviously using the worst possible example of CGI...just doing so as counterpoint. There is fantastic work happening in CGI films and great work continues to be seen in hand drawn animation. The "which is superior" question is a silly question in the first place -- art isnt great because of its medium, great art is made by great artists.

I like them both equally. It takes a tremendous amount of talent and skill to produce a worthwhile product using either method. When done right, they're both stunning in their results.

The OP didn't ask which is superior. He asked which YOU as an individual prefer. Personally I go with CGI because I think it will hold up better over the years where as hand drawn seems to develop a worn and faded look. Unless you have a studio like Disney to come along and restore it the way they are doing with their old animated films like Sleeping Beauty.

I read the part where the OP is asking people to choose one over the other.

There is no need for a choice, animation is a bountiful table, anything you reach for is likely to make you happy.

Both have equal merit and both can be considered serious art. The tools may be different but both require a lot time, effort and talent to pull off right. Also, just like in live action, story and characters rule the roost. No amount of CGI magic can save a bad script. Just like having DaVinci draw and color your animation would a save a bad script.

Which is why Disney and Pixar in their respective fields have been so successful. No point in spending millions on either if the story sucks and both have made great movies because they pick and write great stories.

I love them both and will continue to promote both.

I like both, but with everything it seems if you get too much of something your left wanting more of the other. I for one cannot wait for The Princess and the Frog, maybe the last hand animated feature from Disney for some time.

I like both CG and traditional animation. And before people start to criticize, I'm speaking from an animation perspective and not necessarily a story perspective. In my opinion, a story can be good regardless of the visuals being presented. However, good animation will enhance the viewing experience while bad animation will diminish it.

Both medium have their merits and there have been a good number of movies/shows produced. However, both medium also have their shares of hackneyed animation done in the name of style. I can tolerate stylistic attempts up to a certain degree, beyond that, why bother.

Top on my list of good studios are:
Pixar - I still think of them as a separate entity since their work have been consistently creative and original. Their work have generally include great story concepts and complementary animation that pulls the viewer in for a fun time.

Disney - Classic animations from Disney are great and they are still the standard to be measured against. These works are not in question because Walt Disney, himself, was a great innovator in the field. However, in recent years, there have been hits and misses with some of their movies.

Dreamworks - Have potential. Some of their more recent works have been more interesting, notably Kung Fu Panda.

Lucas Arts - Some hits, some misses. Good - Star Wars: the Clone Wars currently on Cartoon Network, bad - Star Wars: Clone Wars shorts from a few years ago. Both series are stylized but the current one is more pleasant to view as opposed to the handdrawn characters done earlier. Most of those characters don't even resemble people.

DC and Marvel works - Some hits, some misses. Good - Invincible Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Ultimate Avengers, X-Men 90s series, Spider-Man 90s series, the Filmation era of DC cartoons, tolerable - JL Final Frontier, Superman: Doomsday, some of the Batman: Gotham Knight, bad - a lot of the current DC and Marvel cartoon shows, some of Batman: Gotham Knight.

There is a lot more variety in traditional animation. If you have seen one CGI movie you have seen them all. The detail does look amazing, but I have a feeling CGI is approaching what real life looks like and I am not that interested in an exact duplicate of real life.

Both, there are hits and misses with both of them. Final Fantasy Advent Children and Spirits Within are breathtaking for CGI. A lot of anime and disney movies are breathtaking for hand drawn animation. It really depends on how well it individually is done. I've seen some horrid CGI and I've seen horrid hand done.

Hand drawn by far. It's sad to see that it's becoming a lost art.
