This is the pertinent section of the thread over at Beyond3D. I've looked at the evidence, and it's pretty convincing, and there are logical reasons given for the specific resolution used too (1138x600).

Bungie admits that it does run at 640p. They say that they did because of lighting. They also say that you won't notice the difference since the 360 upconverts it up to 1080p. Here is the link to gamespot.

Back in the day, it would take PC years to catch up with consoles, when the 360 was released, it was pretty even, 6 month later the first gen of Graphic Card were release (with Dx10 spec) and you could run Oblivion in 1920x1080 with HDR (no AA) and AF at 30fps... now you can run it in 60fps with FSAA...

the game looks good no doubt about it..but the fact that Microsoft did mislead the public on the back of the box by saying 720p "yes it runs upscaled" but not native when it does not run in NATIVE 720p but there is no disclaimer that the game is not native 720p THAT IS DECEPTIVE though with the game and the way it plays and looks i do not think its that much of a a problem. just the fact that MICROSOFT did not tell the full truth about the game being true HD is deceptive.
640p is not a HD industry standard. 720p,1080i,1080p are.

Hmm, I think microsoft doesn't want to admit that the Xenos can't handle DX10 HDR effects at 720p.

Are you kidding?

The PC has always been far more powerful at the same point in time. Maybe you were just playing on old PCs

I'm sure if you look around you'll find a ton of games that do the same thing. These days lighting and filtering accomplish a lot for developers that saves them time on creating hi-res assets

There is a difference in performance, but it's not due to the power of the systems involved. It's due to the specialization of the systems involved.

It's easier to optimize code for one hardware configuration. It's also easier to have the game console pretty much stripped down and optimized for gaming.

Just to clarify, I agree with you . Just explaining why there's an appearance that consoles have better hardware than PCs over a given timeframe.

But that's just not been the case, seriously

The version of Oblivion for example on 360 has had a major strip down and retweaking. Going back in the day, Wing Commander was running on PCs when the NES was brand new, and they later got a stripped down version (able to run on the SNES do to customization yes).

Compare the 2 versions, and you're going ot find a big difference

MS's Xbox website used to say (not sure if it still does) that all titles are "required to be authored" in at least 720p. And now the 360 "killer app" isn't!

Well, the 360 version actually worked a slight bit better at first, since it forced 2x AA at the same time as running HDR.

Something, at launch you couldn't do with the PC version until the chunk patch came out from ATI [and of course, NVidia's own method in their driver data for the 88xx series].

Most of the graphical advantage that Oblivion enjoys on the PC comes from mods. Which is an accurate point and difference in design. Oblivion's engine can handle 4096x4096 textures, however, it doesn't use them on the PC version [nor on the 360 for that matter, but there we go].

That, and well, the PS3 version of Oblivion is far less likly to randomly crash to desktop [the 360, not so much, but DDE are the bane of Bethsoft XBox games].

Oblivion, is a sore point with me, . While they didn't screw development on the PC side as much as they did with Star Trek Legacy, it did suffer alot from the console development in my opinion.

[ Add / Edit ]
Point of clarity : In theory, the developers had it set os that the 360 version would be running at the max settings. Ie, same as turning the slider all the way up for the PC. Now the forced AA worked for it. I wonder, are you refering to some of the pre-launch talk of how the engine mechanics had to be changed because of the 360's architecture problems?

No, they're required to SUPPORT it.

Explanation makes a lot of sense to me.

PS3 games are pulling the same kinds of dodges, don't think they aren't.

Quite, the 'use' of Anna in this regard isn't really anything to be concerned with. It goes back to one of the few remaining differences between Console and PC game development.

With Console game development, you're far more likly to 'work within the system', than to just raise system requirements .

Course, after reading about the Forge, I'm now actually tempted to get Halo 3.
