Arrow 2016 Hurricane Season Thread (Hurricane Matthew)

No matter if you live at the Gulf Coast, or even the Atlantic Coast. Someone will be impacted. This year they expect the tropics to be very active. It only takes one storm to change peoples lives.

I've given up even worrying about it. All I do is when one is a few days out board the windows and fill some milk jugs and 2 liter bottles with water. I grill a lot so I always have 2 propane tanks full and my trucks gas tanks are pretty much always topped off. I'm single so I'm always stocked up with canned goods and Ramen noodles. All I really have to do fill 3 or 4 5 gallon cans with gas for my generator. Can't go without my Blu-rays... or my beer.

You ever had a hurricane party?

If we are going to be hit by a hurricane this year these would be the names I want blasted all over TV every 5 minutes for two weeks straight. Igor and Otto.

Also Virginie? What hillbilly came up with that name?

No offense to any "mountain folk" on the forums.

I am actually wondering how and what reason they pick these different hurricane names. I know some hurricanes are named after the person that found it. What about the other somewhat awkward names?

I never thought I'd potentially see a Hurricane with my name(Colin)! Having said that, I obviously hope Tropical Depression/Storm/Hurricane Colin doesn't cause anyone harm, but it will be cool to see my name actually on the news.

Except for the cold showers, the hot temperatures and the lack of a good cooked meal, losing your power for that period of time might not be such a bad experience. With Andrew I lost my power for a week, with Katrina for 3 days and with Wilma I lost my power for two weeks. For some reason I was entertained in my home without any electrical devices. I guess families tend to get together more and the lack of electrical power isn't so bad.
As long as you're prepared properly. Otherwise you'll all want to punch each other! Without power you come realize how much you rely on the convenience of electronic technology!

I bet there are people up north excited that a big storm is coming. It won't be fun and exciting once you're stuck at home for days when you don't have power, or warm showers to take. It's not fun, and the day seems to drag on even longer.

If you have a generator and a good supply of diesel it will be. I've already informed the neighbors I'll be selling AC time next hurricane.

That's "IF" there's one headed our way. It's been a long time, but even a tropical storm like Faye was somewhat a disaster in our town 2008.

At least I had power and I was able to watch the Olympics all day.

Ever since Isabel came through Richmond in 2003 and knocked-out power for days, I've had a generator. I've had to use it a few times since moving to KY, particularly when Ike came through in 2008. It's hard to justify the expense of one when the weather is good, but it's invaluable when the power is out for indefinite periods of time.

Man, my grocery store was packed this morning, and I live in the Washontopn DC area, were just supposed to get some rain and wind, nothing substantial

I'll be going to work as usual tomorrow, I heard Irene is now a category 2 hurricane.

I'd love to have a whole house automatic generator, but so far I haven't been able to justify spending 5-6K on something I'd only use for a few days every 5-10 years. I have a decent sized portable portable, and my master electrician friend wires it into my main power box to power all of the 110 in the house. She does it properly so that there is no risk of it backfeeding to the power workers on the line. No A/C, cold showers, home theater or PC because they are either 220 or too easy to damage from the cyclic power of a portable generator; but it's not so bad "roughing it" for a few days.

Ha ha ha, I'm sure that's true for some people.

As for the Irene, it's interesting to see how low the pressure has gone and the winds haven't responded to that by increasing. A central pressure of 945 mb usually means a higher end cat. 3 instead of the 110 mph Irene has now.
