Looks like Irene might make a direct hit somewhere in the Carolinas this weekend as a Cat 2 or 3.

Yeah my uncle called yesterday from Charleston when it looked like it was zeroing in on them again. Saw the updated track, and it looks like it may be shifting north a bit... as a cat. 4 at landfall.

I finally broke down and got flood insurance this year. My house is not in a flood zone so it's not required, and my street has never flooded all the way back to Hurricane Camille; but I am less than one mile from Mobile Bay. If a Katrina style storm surge hit my area as directly as it hit Bay St. Louis, I have no doubt at all that I'd see a good bit of water in my home. Even as far as we were from a direct hit by Katrina; homes right on the water, maybe 3/4 of a mile from me, were completely devestated. Even a three story apartment complex on the water got condemned. When I discovered it was only $248 (thanks to not being in an actual flood zone) for a whole hurricane season worth of peace of mine... it was a no brainer!

Good luck to those in the path of this one! I love living so close to the water, but hurricanes can make an otherwise great way of life VERY stressful at times.

And we could have had "potentially" bad aftershocks yesterday.

Updated to a Cat 3
When she comes by NE FL, we'll have some wind, and showers. That's about it. Business as usual here.

Pretty Impressive Hurricane. The U.S. has been spared from a Hurricane since 2008 and from a Major Hurricane since 2005, so it's been a while. Even if the forecast pans out and Irene strikes the northeast even as a Cat. 1 or Cat. 2, it will be a rare event.

It looks like it's heading towards Florida. It hasn't turned north (yet) according to that map.

It has been riding up the eastern Bahamas all day, gaining quite a bit of latitude. It took the first Northwest turn earlier today, later on, it will take the due north turn. The set up isn't there for Irene to strike Florida.

What might make it look like it's heading towards FL is that it's likely expanding and because it's moving NW.

Irene making its closest approach to South Florida. It's visible in the Miami radar and you can somewhat see the eyewall over the Eastern Bahamas.

A new Tropical Depression has formed in the Eastern Atlantic, but that one will stay out in open waters.

I'm in Lancaster PA, and it appears we are in the "cone" for this thing to arrive Sunday morning. Not sure what or how much rain/wind we will get, but it does have people on edge around here, especially after we got a good jolt from the 5.8 earthquake just 2 days ago. I mean, what's natural event is next.....a giant meteor?

Good luck John.

As of now. We are just getting the outer bands of this storm. It's going to be raining, and sunny back and fourth all day tomorrow. It's been showering on and off today but not sure if it's associated with Irene since I haven't seen the latest radar image.

Though the winds have picked up to 25mph I've heard. Nonetheless, it's business as usual here.

I think someone here pissed off mother nature......an earthquake and then a hurricane (both of which haven't happened here in many decades) in less than 1 week apart from one another is a bit much!

I was going to go see Columbiana and our idiot brother (I even purchased them yesterday morning before I found out about Irene). I'll be going tomorrow to get a refund. I'll be staying in of course and watching all the 11 blu-ray movies I purchased in the past few weeks on that day instead and go to the movies some time next week. If Irene doesn't pass by, I'll repurchase the tix again on Sunday.

Unless the storm knocks out your power for a week or two, then you'll need to change those plans again . I hope all is well for your area though

Except for the cold showers, the hot temperatures and the lack of a good cooked meal, losing your power for that period of time might not be such a bad experience. With Andrew I lost my power for a week, with Katrina for 3 days and with Wilma I lost my power for two weeks. For some reason I was entertained in my home without any electrical devices. I guess families tend to get together more and the lack of electrical power isn't so bad.

As long as you're prepared properly. Otherwise you'll all want to punch each other! Without power you come realize how much you rely on the convenience of electronic technology!

I bet there are people up north excited that a big storm is coming. It won't be fun and exciting once you're stuck at home for days when you don't have power, or warm showers to take. It's not fun, and the day seems to drag on even longer.
