The explosive Korean War novel by celebrated author James A. Michener (Sayonara, South Pacific) soars to the screen in this rousing cinema classic from director Mark Robson (Bright Victory, Von Ryan’s Express). Not every Navy pilot can guide his aircraft from a wave-tossed carrier deck, seek out targets over unfamiliar Korean terrain, and then return to what looks like a speck in the sea. Naval Reservist Harry Brubaker (movie legend William Holden, Stalag 17) can. This masterful story of a war-weary World War II veteran who must leave his family to fight again combines moving drama with surefire, bombs-away aerial action. Luminous Grace Kelly (High Noon) co-stars as Brubaker’s loving wife, and rounding out a stellar cast are Fredric March (Inherit the Wind), Mickey Rooney (Ambush Bay) and Robert Strauss (The Seven Year Itch). The Bridges at Toko-Ri landed two Academy Award nominations for 1955, with Paramount’s Special Effects team winning the coveted Oscar for their thrilling, fiery handiwork.

It looks like the aspect ratio for Kino's blu-ray will be 1.85:1

Finally, a 1954 movie in the correct AR. Now, if we could only get a BD Naked Jungle, Summertime, a good Suddenly, and Hobson's Choice (debatable), we'd be in clover. Cinematically, beware 1954.

Is the picture quality on this better than the Imprint disc? Is it worth an upgrade? I don’t guess a 4k release is in the cards for this title.

It is a completely different master than (the probably older one of) Imprint, which is also only in Academy Ratio. However, the new master of the Kino Lorber is another so-called 4K restoration from Paramount Pictures (?), which is mostly messed up. This time, once again, they completely overdid it with the DNR, leaving the image on the verge of collapsing into a waxy mess in many scenes. Some sequences look better than others, and I'm sure there will again be many people who think the result is great, but as a fan of purist WAC-style restorations, this disc is just a big disappointment.

Is the imprint disc despite its issues more filmic than the US release.

Blind bought this release and was pleasantly stunned by many elements.

So much effortless production value and taut direction. Suspense without music.

One of my favorite releases of this year so far.

Great release, great movie. Stunning for a regular Blu. I see lots of grain, does not look scrubbed to me. Nice job KL.

I agree that this looks great. The aerial footage is fantastic for a film from 1954. Also Grace Kelly. Highly recommended.
