Hello all, first post. I've been lurking around for the past couple months and I would first like to say I am impressed with the amount of knowledge and information available on this site. It has greatly helped me in my quest for Blu-ray bliss.
I am wanting to buy a wireless router for my PS3 and my online research from the past few weeks has left me more unsure/confused ![]() I live in an apartment and my router would be placed in a different room, about 40-50 ft. away from my PS3, if that helps at all. |

get one that supports the feature available on the PS3 about easy setup, it like send a signal and the two handshake etc...automatically or something. If I upgrade that is what I will get.

I spent about 150 on a WRT54GX4 Wireless-G Broadband Router with SRX400 ,and found that even when my ps3 was 25 feet away with 100%-95% sig strength that it would lag horrible, Hard wired or w/e, just coulndt play anything online. Since I also have a 360 I went to there Router recommendations, and I decided to go with the Netgear rangemax wpn824, since the N routers havent been getting good reviews .. neways for my overall comp speed I did lose about 2mbs but thats probly cause the router can't take all those mbs I bet if your getting the usual 6mbps you wouldnt lose anything, I currently have 30mbps/5mbup. I droped to 28/4.7 but now everything is lag free on both my ps3's our ps3 in the basement is probly over 100ft away, and gets about 50-65% sig strength with the netgear wpn824. I can play lag free and download speeds are great signal is a bit worse then the SRX400 but gameplay downloading and all that is 100times better... I had lots of online issues with the expesnive linksys it stopped me from joining alot of servers on both the 360 and ps3. Im very happy with the rangmax WPN824 but i'd use one of the ones that works with the 360 on there list, since that would bound to be just as good for the ps3 as the 360. Member expesnive is not always better I got a great deal on the 100$ rangemax since the store I was at was closing ... hope that helps bud
heres my old one http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WRT54G.../dp/B000C77XSS here is the good routers that the 360 likes just incase you have a brand you like http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/co.../equipment.htm Last edited by supersix4; 06-13-2007 at 07:11 PM. |

I use this: Buffalo Technology AirStation g54 Cable/DSL Smart Router paid about 40-50$$$ @ circuit city. I have it in my office upstairs, PS3 is in livingroom downstairs. Good signal, no issues at all. doesn't seem to lag (haven't tried online game play yet), using cheap DSL.

UPnP=Universal Plug and Play
the problem with some routers is they have big time NAT(Network Address Translation)setting, restrictions which my linksys srx400 did which limits servers, mb's all that and can create bad lag, thats why I reccommend getting something on the 360 list cause that will 99.9% be good for any system that uses internet. |

DIR-655 DLINK with Gigabit LAN = Works Great
DI-634M DLINK with 10/100 LAN = Works Great (On XBox List) I had some problems with the SRX400 Linksys when it first came out. It kept resetting because it seemed like it was confusing all of the extreme traffic with attacks or something. Frustrated the hell out of me so I went back to the DLINK. Won't buy anything in this class except DLINK because I like them so much. DLINK Fanboy here ![]() |

I tried netgear and had a hard time with initial set up. customer service was horrible, but I eventually figured it out myself.

the DGL-4400 works pretty well too. Have to realize when you're looking at a router especifically for the PS3 that you're going to be use g standard. The other perks don't really help the PS3 any, stronger transmitter is good, but the protocol standard isn't going to be much of an indicator of that.

Hey babyblu,
i have the the Apple Airport Express and the New airport extreme and both have worked great with the ps3 as well as my windows based computer its very simple prolly better than anything else. as for range the extreme i believe has a range of 300-500 feet, not too sure about it. i have a large flat apartment about 1000 sq ft. and i get 100-97% connection with the extreme. |

I have had a PS3 since launch day, and I have never had my Linksys WRT 54G to work well with it. I picked up a Buffalo Airstation on sale last week for $30 after the mail in rebates, and it was a remarkable improvement. The Linksys never had a signal strength above 60-65%, but the Buffalo test 90% continuously. All problems of slow browsing, downloading, and game disconnection were fixed immediately. Now, I do not have any video lag from from Tversity. |

I'm thinking of picking up a package that includes "high-speed internet". Turns out the package is only 320k download and 120k upload. I may also buy a bluray PS3.
A. I don't want cables running to my PCs. B. I suppose my kids will want to play PS3 games online. This makes me think wireless because of "A" above, and I hear a wireless router should serve a PS3 as well as a couple of PCs. Is that right? I'd not heard of the internet "lag" problem until now. Is my "slow" high speed cable internet likely to present problems vis-a-vis a wireless router? I have 3 neighbors within 150 feet and one that's maybe 300 feet away. I think they aren't sniffer types, pretty sure. But I live on a steep hillside in full view of my city. Should I still be bothered about encryption? Finally, (in case you know), will a PS3 play a PC flight sim like Falcon 4.0 with a flightstick and throttle? Can a Falcon PC program disk be loaded onto the PS3 hard drive and run from that? If not, are there any PS3 flight sims that use a flightstick and throttle? Thanks mate, |

You should always use some level of encryption. It's just a good measure. Now, while pretty all of the ones available are relatively easy to break, it's changes it from a crime of convienance [ie, I thought it was a free hotspot] to an active crime.
The internet lag here refers to the speed rates that you get limited by with current wireless technologies. For the PS3, we'll talk about it's fastest supported protocol, 802.11g gives you a standard throughput of 19 MBit/s and max data of 54 MBit/s. That's noticably less than most people's rates [now, the 320k download/upload brings up the good question, is that's bytes or bits? with those numbers, if it's high-speed, that sounds alot like bytes so bear that difference in mind too]. Consider : my router is a g router, and gives my ps2 54MBit, the physical connection it has with my PC gives it a gigabit [which effectively means it's limited by my cablemodem]. PS3 will really only run PS3, PS2, and PS1 games. There are flight sims, but they use the sixaxis controller. Near as I can tell for the PS3 there aren't flight stick style games or controllers coming out, but I'm not the best person to ask regarding those games, they're not my thing so I don't research them ![]() Another consider if you're looking at a wireless network. Look at your phones. If you have a cordless phone, you're going to be in for some discomfort if it's a 2.4ghz band [and even some annoyance if it's a 5Ghz band if you step up to an 802.11n network]. |

![]() ![]() Curious if anyone has any experience with Belkin routers. The only reason I ask is because it looks like they offer a Lifetime Warranty which sounds great. However, how useful is a lifetime warranty if they replace crap with more crap. ![]() |

Encrpytion by itself does not restrict access, it simply hides the data while in transit. Everyone should consider MAC address filter which restricts what physical device can go through your router.
I use a USRobotics with wireless G without any problems. However, I am not a gamer and simply use the wireless connection for downloading firmware, going to the online store for demo games, etc. |
