I had my heart set on the scs-01 from svs but I think they will sound great they don't look to good. I was thinking about going with AV123 and wanted to maybe grab some svs sbs-01 for the rears. Would that work or should I spend a few bucks more and grab some av123 rears? Thanks

surrounds do not have to match the fronts. it is not as important as the fronts matching the center. some peeps like to get all one brand but really for the rears you can get whatever you like. i am going to be matching my brands going forward though just through personal preference

It's always recommended to have all your speakers from the same manufacture and same models, but i agree you back speakers don't have to be the same as the mains, but if you can keep the speakers in the same family you will notice the timber matching will be much better and the EQ on the receiver will match the fronts more.

The same reasons for timbre matching the fronts applies to timbre matching the surrounds with the fronts. Often during intense action and adventure movies you have various objects making sounds that not only pan across the front screen in any direction right/left and up/down but also for objects that move in any direction going toward the screen by coming from the rear or in any direction moving away from the screen by coming from the front. There are lots of examples of these sound effects but right off my mind are air battles or dog fights, vehicles chases across terrain in all directions, and the very cool scene in Hidalgo when the locomotive comes right out of the screen such that you can clearly hear the locomotive passing from front to middle and exiting in the rear behind you. A timbre match system is going to sound better during scenes like that than one that isn't timbre matched in the surrounds.
I agree it is of utmost importance to have the fronts timbre matched as a bare minimum. However, it you want to get the most out your sound system especially for sound pans that come from front/back or vice versa, the surrounds should be timbre matched too. ![]() |
