Default Question regarding speaker distance setting.

When you run a calibration and it sets your speaker distance what exactly is the relevance here? does it boost DB the farther it gets, eq changes, etc? it keeps reading my sub as 9 feet away when its actually 3 feet away, when this setting alone is manually adjusted what is one to expect to occur?

The sound is delayed from speakers that are closer so that all sound arrives at the listening position at the same time.

It optimizes the timing of your sound field, as BIslander pointed out above. The auto setup also adjusts the volume of every individual speaker, and obviously distance can be a factor in these settings as well. The farther away a speaker is, the louder it will need to be to match speakers that are closer.

Sometimes the auto setups have a little trouble with subwoofers. You can correct the distance setting for your sub and it won't hurt anything.

Evertime I have run Audyssey, it really screws up the distance and db levels for my sub. Like fireman said, just adjust the setting in the receiver to a more appropriate level that you believe sounds better.

At least with Audyssey (not sure about your setup) the sub distance will seem incorrect, but the distance reported accounts for phase & time. It shouldn't be changed unless it is way off (like 20 ft or so).

The sub settings are probably right, if it gives you a distance of 14' and your sub is only 10' away from your sitting area this would be correct. The reason why your subs distance during calibration is always further away is because low frequency travels faster and the sound waves are much larger it needs to place it further away than it actually is so it stays in time with the rest of your speakers, this is a very common mistake people make when manually adjusting the distance for their sub.

I didn't realize this. Thanks for the info.

And Audyssey finds this by timing the sound-to-microphone.

I'm gonna have to check my sub distance settings.

Great, that is easy to correct back to the settings Audyessey provided, thanks twitch. But let me ask you this, I have 2 subs using a Y-splitter, and when doing Audyssey it will only test the one and not the other. What would be the correct fix for this in my receivers settings? And I do feel the need for 2 subs due to my basements dimensions and furniture layout, otherwise I have drastic variations of bass in the room, and the 2 subs have helped quite a bit to fill these voids.

2 subs makes this a bit harder to set-up durring calibration. If the subs are about the same distance from your seating area i would run the calibration with 1 sub to get the correct distance, then hook up the second sub and run the calibration again but in your calibration settings only check the level and EQ when running the set-up for the second time, make sure you match the volume on the subs as best you can before calibrating. When this is done you need a second person to manually adjust the volume and phase on the back of each sub as you sit and listen to the system to try and match and blend the 2 subs as best you can.
