Somebody please explain this for me.
This is a quote from the blu-ray.com review of the movie "Max Manus: Man of War": "most every US TV set cannot accept 1080/50 signal, and one needs to have a player capable of outputting 1080/50 signal - native Region-A players don’t - to access the disc's content". The last part is perfectly clear for me. The first part is not. I understand from it that it doesn't matter if you have a player capable of outputting that kind of signal, you still will have to deal with the fact that most US tv sets won't accept it. The thing is that I bought a Momitsu BDP 899 player, and to my surprise, I was able to play that movie (Max Manus) and another disc with 1080i/50 encoding. Since I read that quote before hand, I didn't think I was going to be able to. So the question is: Is the Momitsu converting the signal, so my TV can accept it, or is my TV set capable of accepting the 1080i/50 signal? My guess is option A, but still the quote in the review seems to suggest something else. Note: My TV set is a Sony KDL- 40V4100 bought in Costa Rica, so I don't know if it is a Latin American version with different specifications than those of the american version. It looks very american to me ![]() |

He was incorrect on both counts. Quite a handful of US LCD's can handle PAL content (1080i50) and a few US BD players can also handle PAL.
![]() However, I cannot comment on your specific setup. I would assume the Momitsu is infact sending the 1080i50 signal to your TV and your TV is able to handle it. I highly doubt, though I could be wrong, that the Momitsu has the ability to convert PAL to NTSC. You should be able to hit "info" or something on your TV's remote to see what signal it is receiving. |

Some U.S. displays do in fact handle 1080i/50 Hz, but for the sake of simplicity it is wise to assume in most cases that a specific model will not. It is doubtful the BD player is converting it into a format acceptable for the most common U.S. displays.
