Default I'm a little confused

Hey Gang,

I want to get a Blu Ray reader for my PC so i can watch HD movies on my 32" LCD TV (Which is currently connected to my computer via VGA). I've read that you're supposed to use HDMI with blue ray and since my TV has 2 HDMI inputs, I was going to buy a DVI to HDMI cable and use that to connect it to my PC. Is this setup likely to work? and is there any free software you guys would recommend? I've read lots of posts of people having trouble with Blu Ray and I want to straighten things out before I spend a couple of hundred dollars on it.

Thanks,

I think there are some sites that run your PC through a hardware check to see if it should work. I'd try that if I were you. Also, most likely, you'll need hardware that supports HDCP so that might be the first thing you want to work on (seeing if your hardware supports it, graphics card and TV). The blu-ray drives usually come with software for blu-ray playback (and if you get a drive that can burn blu-rays, provide that capability as well).

Some of guys here are using PCs/blu-ray so they'll probably be a lot more helpful. Sorry.

I ran the Advisor program, It passed everything except Blu Ray Disc Drive, Software Player (Obviously), HDCP Complient Display (Will the HDMI cable fix that?) and Graphics Hardware Driver, which I don't understand because it said i need the forceware driver 167.37 and i have 169.21 installed.

what monitor do you have? have you looked it up to see if it is hdcp comliant. hdmi doesnt always mean compliant. mine is dvi and is compliant.
what graphics card are you using?

Word of caution, until I bought a blruay drive the advisor insisted that I didn't have a HDCP complaint setup, EVEN THOUGH i had dvi to hdmi to a HDCP complaint Television, with HDCP complaint Video card.
As soon as I bought the drive, I had Green lights across the board.

Most of the problems people have are associated with the Software, PowerDVD and WinDVD, etc...

What you're thinking of doing will work, as for free software, that is unfortunately not possible legally...

and you're better off buying either PowerDVD, and/or WinDVD simply for the updates, until the programs and tech are settled... I would start with one, until you find a movie that doesn't play, then get both, that's what I did... Personally, I would recommend starting with WinDVD, but that's just me... considering PDVD's support is lame...
What kind of video card do you have right now?
I would suggest making sure your drivers are up to date, if you use Nvidia, I recommend the newest beta drivers 174.74
