I'm looking to pickup Aladdin and Lion King and know it's not out on BD yet. My question is are cartoons PQ and AQ on BD a lot superior to DVD?
If it is, I'll probably wait for BD even though it may be a while. Thanks |

Cel animation can look gorgeous if the transfer is done right.
Just look at The Simpsons Movie. |

Absolutely! Especially if the film gets good TLC in the process.

Also notice that the Dragon Ball Z movies (which are cel animation) are of a poor technical quality as well. Nowhere near as bad as the public domain release of Gulliver's Travels I bet, but, well... they were made from theatrical prints with cue marks plainly visible throughout. Yeah, if you want cel animation, you better stick to Disney for now. The Simpsons Movie and the Futurama movies look great, but they're animated digitally. I'm not 100% but I'd guess the little bits of modern anime we have are also digital. Oh! Akira. Akira looks nice and is old enough to be cel animation. |

At the very worst, a cartoon of any sort may look like just an upconverted DVD (which in itself is not bad). I thought that "Paprika" fit into this category, since it looked a bit soft to me.
At the very best, a cartoon will look sharper, cleaner, more colorful, and much more detailed than the DVD counterpart. I was blown away by how great "Sleeping Beauty" looked, and I'm sure that all other Disney films will look equally spectacular when they get around to restoring/releasing them. I was also pleased with the quality of "Pinocchio," "Akira," "The Animatrix," and just about all CGI-animated films. I'm looking forward to seeing how "Fire and Ice" will look on BD (the darn release date was pushed back...do'h!). |

Akira maybe older then the DBZ movies by 1 year since I believe Dead Zone(American title) came out in 1989 in Japan(or was it 1990?) which is also when the DBZ series started but original Dragon Ball started in 1986. The job that was done with the DBZ Blu-rays is Funimation's very own remastering job but however Funimation has the rights now to the Toei remasters for the Dragon Box for DBZ season 1 which keeps the original 4:3 image but yet remastered without cropping the image to add more picture to the sides by making it a 16:9 like Funimation did to the TV series.

But perhaps to add on what I was really trying to say, Blu-ray has plenty of potential to offer for traditional animation. Do not underestimate the results just because it was an old production. ![]() |
