Default who wants to have a big laugh ?

here's the review of a french website on the bluray of Godfather:

"Note image : 2.5/5 une restauration un peu décevante, avec du bon et du très moyen : parfois un manque de contraste, parfois des noirs un peu bouchés, parfois du bruit vidéo "à la Battlestar Galactica", et quelques rares plans qui rappellent du DVD de mauvaise facture, ce qui donne un ensemble inégal.

Note son : bien (étant donné l'age du film)"

I translate: the restoration is disappointing.. lack of contrast, the blacks are too blacks, grainy like "Battlestar Galactica", and some shots that look like the worst Dvd transfer.

Audio: well..considering the age of the film.

This kind of review is not rare in France.French professional reviewers and consumers lack knowledge, and they still don't know what film grain is. Movies such as "Gladiator" is considered to be one of the best tranfers

Oh my... I'm lost for words.
I thought it was very beautiful, I love it when the movie are preserved with grain and such, gives it a wonderful filmic feel.

Yeah...
[Show spoiler]we could say that the French lack knowledge in general...

I'll agree that this all-too-short review is rather nitpicky. I remember "The Godfather" having decent contrast. Grain is present, but surely it's an intended look, and it wouldn't be proper without it. Above all, it is a sharper image than any DVD before it. So what's the problem?!

That is an absolutely blatant and quite despicable statement to have made. To group the entire professional reviewers and populace of France in this light based on one review you comment on is ....well, let me just say...it leaves me rather speechless.

I actually can't believe someone would actually write this kind of slur.

It's kind of funny. You'd think that if the stereotype of the French cinephile was true, they'd be all about a transfer with a healthy amount of grain. Ah well, just goes to show the weakness of relying on stereotypes.

hein? I just want to inform. And let you know that the review on Godfather exists I didn't made it up.
And also that I'm not generalizing french reviewers based on just one reviewer, but I tend to notice that most french reviewers(pro or just consumers like us) lack knowledge about what a blu ray should look like in term of picture quality

I would say that German viewers and reviewers are clueless as well, some of their Amazon.de spoutings are hilarious.

I've purchased 400+ Blu-Rays from all regions, and have read consumer feedback at all websites, including Amazon UK, Amazon Fr, and Amazon Germany, among many others. I also speak 2 languages and am a huge fan of domestic & international cinema. I think it's very dangerous and narrow-sighted, to group everyone together. We've not interviewed everyone around the world, to see what the "consensus" is on any one BD release. I've read reviews on all sites, including on our very own US review sites that made me slap my hand to my forehead and I am sure you have as well.

Just my 2 cents-
DB

I actually think he's a "legitimate" reviewer.
It says in his title that he's a member of HCFR Association staff.

The members there have to pay 15 euros every year.

Being a member of the populace being stereotyped doesn't give you the right to further the stereotype.

Aside from that, hilarious review! Thanks for that.

If you check Amazon or even the user reviews on this site, you'll see plenty of people who think The Godfather Trilogy looks horrible. I wouldn't pin that opinion on the French per se.

Thanks for that John... I am French and I do feel like I have a certain objectivity regarding blu-ray technical qualities.

Oh and Maxbond, if I was making general asumptions regarding French people the way you just did, but based on your posts this time, I would add that French people can't speak English without making serious grammatical errors

cheers

Well, you may already be happy if a Frenchman speaks English at all, even if it's bad!

For the French here on the forum: Keep up the good work!
