Default new LED tv's worth the money??

was checking these out and was thinking of upgrading sometime soon. the samsung i think 8000 at BB was fantastic looking. i dont think i have seen a better looking picture (of coarse it had a blu ray running on it) but simply amazing realistic picture, felt like i was there and tha was in the store .

ususally they dont look as good at the stores, but i was impressed so much it makes me want to upgrade. any thoughts or owners that can give some opinions about these tvs... thanks

You can check reviews on CNet of the LED models if you like. They did get very good scores, however, there were a few things that really irritated the reviewers and were kinda big drawbacks in their opinions. My guess is, it would be a good idea to wait till the next models come out. The first generation of anything usually has some bugs and hiccups in it that get ironed out with new models. But, yes, they do look fantastic, even in the stores. They're definitely good TVs despite their drawbacks. I'm just personally leery of the first models of any new technology.

I agree, I think they look awesome in the stores. I'm just waiting to see what the general consensus on them is though. For now, I am completely satisfied with my XBR

BTW: I know SeanFarley is one of the members of this forum that owns one...maybe shoot him a PM to ask him his opinions about it. I'm sure he loves it though

Edge lit LCD's are not great with producing deep blacks. Sony used full LED's in their XBR 8 LCD's and this was the closest that a LCD came to matching the black level of the Pioneer Kuro plasma. The price for the XBR8 product line was not cost effective unfortunately and so Sony has moved away from full LED’s in their displays (Sony did not use edge lit LED’s in their XBR 9 line as well). I believe that manufacturers have moved to the cheaper edge lit LCD's because of the economy.

Personally I am waiting for OLED to take over before I give up my Kuro.

they are great tv's. and with any tv they need tweaking, calibration, etc to make that performance be the best it can possibly can. and when they do receive proper treatment, correct seating arrangments, etc.. the set is imho worth the money. of course im talking about the b6000

It's really rather simple. If you go LCD, get a Sony. If you go Plasma, well it used to be get a Pioneer, but now it's get a Panasonic.

Yup, I felt the same way when I was in Best Buy recently. I walked by a Sammy 46" LED and was like Very clear picture and vivid colors. I don't usually upgrade on the spot but I did this time. I have no regrets whatsoever. There are a few artifacts with the Standard mode of motion technology sometimes, during slo-mo sports replays and Modern Family (for some reason??) but there are six settings to adjust that. I would recommend my TV to anyone, not sure about others though, but they must be similar.

You're probably gonna be waiting a good ten years, minimum, with how expensive even ten inch OLED screen is right now. LOL!

I will be be getting my 8500 in a week. First reports are extremely positive. Blacks are true blacks. Only wish it came in a 60".
Its a good set, but its not better than a Kuro.

Its a tough decision. If you want the best overall picture quality plasma is still the way to go, but you also have to consider your environment. Do you have a brighter setting or do you view TV in a dim or dark environment?

Although plasmas have improved bright room viewing with their filters LCD still has an advantage over most in this category. If a lot of sunlight comes into the room you may get some bad glare on many plasmas. There are some that are very good at diffusing this though.

If you prefer a dimly lit or dark room then plasma cannot be touched. LCD's off-axis viewing and screen uniformity problems are much more visible in these scenarios.

thanks, my HT room is in my finished basement, so little to no light except for lamps in the room, one of which is slightly behind the tv area when on.

i was reserching the LG led tv tonight and it has received some great reviews. seems like it has all the bells and whistles. i want to stay in the over 50 inch area as my roon permits that size. i am considering very heavily the 58" panny plasma. its the right size and well they say it kicks butt. but i do enjoy the realism that the lcd/led with motionflo provide. movies seem so life like on these tv's. while the panny's have 600hz, the lcd have 120-240hz. not sure how all that works, but blu rays seem so much more life like and real on the lcd/led tv's, especially the new samsung led's, i mean WOW!!

Something you have to keep in mind is that in the store these TV's are not calibrated and they are set to the brightest settings. Yes, this looks very flashy and colors burst out of the screen, but this is not an accurate picture. When these TV's are properly calibrated the colors will look no different than a properly calibrated plasma....this is assuming both sets produce relatively accurate colors of course.

Now, there are some LED LCD's that I like a lot and in some cases I would take one over certain plasmas. The LG LED set is one of the best released this year. In the HDTV shootout it came in third behind the Pioneer Kuro and the Samsung B860. That's very impressive because for one it produces excellent blacks though not on Kuro or Panasonic V10 levels, and it is highly adjustable in the menu awarding it a very accurate picture. Its color accuracy is the main reason it beat out the Panasonic V10. This is also the reason the Samsung B860 came ahead...its color accuracy. The LG and the V10 both produce deeper blacks than the B860 though.

Right now Best Buy has the 55" LG on sale for $1999.99 which is a very good price. I've seen this set myself and I can tell you that it truly is very impressive. I was surprised at how uniform the screen is on this set. You should also look at THIS new Sharp 52" LED for $1599.00 shipped. Chad B over on avsforum has an excellent review on it and its a winner.

You should consider the Panasonic V10 as an option too since it will give you the best blacks. Just compare...the other sets are a little more accurate, but you may prefer the more realistic blacks of the Panny. If you want more real estate then consider a 58" Panasonic S1 or a 58" Samsung B650...the B860 if you can get a good price on it and your budget allows for it.

If you have a whole dedicated room in the basement (so I pressume light controllable), have you considered going front projection? Once you go front projection you wont ever look back.

I was thinking 5 years at the most for OLED to be perfected and reasonably priced (wishful thinking on my part).

For the time being I am very happy with my Accucal.org calibrated Kuro.
