Default Weird surround 'problem-ish!)

Hello all

I have a Sony STR DG820 receiver and my new Sony BD350 blu-ray player (godda love the wife!!) and 7.1 speakers. The strange thing i have is when playing a 5.1 BD, the receiver is set to AFT AUTO BUT im still getting audio through the back surround speakers!. Im not telling the receiver to Matrix to these speakers so am a little confused as to why and how to turn them off!. I never had this 'problem' when i used to play BD through a PS3. Am i missing something?

Thanx for your help.

The 7.1 receiver will naturally send the surround signal for a 5.1 channel mix to all of the surround channels.

Does the Sony have a Direct setting? I would scroll through your DSP options and see which ones you have.

First, do only the back surrounds output sound, or do the others as well... what i am asking is are you sure your surrounds and back surrounds are hooked up their proper respective jacks on the back of the receiver.

Beyond that no guess as your manual states AFD auto should not do any processing to the signal beyond adding an LFE track to the sub when none is present.

Maybe the problem is lying with the blu-ray player, do you have a setting on their that may be matrixing or altering the sound before it arrives at the receiver?

EDIT actually after looking back at your manual to make sure i read it write... you meant AFD not AFT correct? that mode seems to be intended for 2 channel sources so i am unclear on what that would do with a multichannel source, as thats what it was intended to create with the 2 channel input source.

No, thats what im saying - i get sound out of all my speakers (7.1 setup) even on 5.1 mixes and im not telling my amp to matrix to the back speakers. If i set my amp to AFD AUTO and play a 5.1 soundtrack, im only supposed to get audio from those speakers BUT im getting audio from all speakers!
